This is covers I bought Xperia XA2 on secondary market with a cover and protective glass attached. Very soon I removed both because edge swipes were quite uncomfortable.

Xperia XA2 with cover and glass. Thanks to the glass - one can perform edge swipe more or less relialbly. But it's far from perfection of Jolla 1.

May for someone it is a big deal to have a protective cover. I don't see any solution for this case yet.

If a device needs extra protection then its designed wrong. (period)

I heard that but I can't agree. I guess any living thing has "removable" cover. Skin and hairs renew itself all the time. Most illustrative example are snakes and some insects. Or you want to say that they are designed wrong. But they have perfect design that human may envy.

I simply sawed/filed some depressions on the sides where needed - not on the phone! ;). No problem since then. But it isn't as smooth as with the J1. It feels like you have to press it down. I don't know if it's hard- or software related.

BTW, is the X and the XA2 same form factor, or will I have to buy a new cover?

@Tanghus With Sony dimension info I would say no. So it case definetly affects. X 129 x 65 x 9,5 mm XA2 142 × 70 × 9,7mm

At times I also experience that edge swipes are not reliably recognized on the XA2 - unlike the Xperia X or the Jolla phones. The reason for this might be the very small margin around the display edge and an algorithm that only recognizes an edge swipe when it starts at the very edge.

A solution could be that the algorithm on devices with very small margins around the display edge is modified to recognize an edge swipe even if it begins a few pixels away from the display edge.

The downside of such approach could be that GUI elements at the very edge of the display are compromised (although taping is a different gesture than swiping).

Just an idea.

Yes, the most severe downside will be with Android apps that also utilize horizontal swipes. Even now these swipe interfere with SFOS edge swipes. I often invoke these swipes instead of edge swipes on XA2.

I think it depend of case and glass. My XA2 works mostly reliable. Some orientations like laying on table make edge swipes almost impossible. Some areas f.ex. top left corner needs more pressure to work. So possibly something to do with contact.

Sides of your case looks bit higher and glass smaller than my set. Not sure if it makes any difference. Glass has margin-like 2 mm wide area on sides that aren't touching actual screen.

BTW regarding laying on table. I heard a complaints from Android users of Xperia - they say that even taps are impossible if you don't hold phone with second hand. AFAIK I experienced this too while protective glass was on the screen.

Possibly solution could be to extend physical borders of sreen with a border created by software means. Yes, we have to sacrifice some of screen space, but this parametr can be customized by user.

Yes, there might be issues with non-standard screen resolution too, but Sony Xperia 1 already has non-typical resolution (1644x3840)
