How safe is it to try 3.3.0 Rokua?

Answering my own question - the unusual long time between early access and final release maked me not install it at the moment. Seems there is something fishy after all...

===

Or, in other words, do you expect another test version of 3.3 before it becomes official? I have never before read about so many critical problems with an early access release; and I've never before not installed an early access release myself. The 2 things I'm asking myself are:

  1. Is it worth waiting for a new version with those problems fixed? Or Is your impression that these are the usual hiccups and I'll just have to live with the risk?
  2. Are all problems solved meanwhile or do the solutions only apply to the individual cases? I see a lot of problems/questions, some solved, some not, a lot of them referring to solutions in other threads... I'm no longer sure if we have basically 3 major problems that can be easily avoided with some precautions before upgrading... or if there's x users with a bunch of issues and nothing in common. :(

Is there a helpful soul out there who has tracked the situation more systematically and can offer an educated guess?

Absolutely no educated guess, just 'confirming your feeling'
(even bound at home: I do not have / do not want to waste the time to reflash and set up anew)

I had to reset my Jolla1, bit of a pain to say the least, but in reality, I had played with/edited/tweaked so many files throughout the system, I suppose it was no surprise that the update would cause problems. The end result was the device booted to to a blank/black screen. I was able to verify that the update had been somewhat successful by checking /etc/sailfish-release via ssh ~ one good reason to leave 'remote connection' enabled in developer mode.

I backed up content of my previous OS, upon restoring the backup to 3.3.0, the only real pain is that I now have to recreate all 16 of my email accounts, as the back up completely ballsed up every mail account, meaning the each password was replaced by 'default', even when edited the account/s would not update, this has been reported by another user and is or will be tracked by jolla.

I took the plunge early and updated without any problems whatsoever my XA2 which is my daily driver. Risky, I know.. Again, seeing all these reports afterwards I don't know if I was lucky or if the majority of people with no problems don't post therefore only the problematic posts show up creating a bad feeling. I do seem to see though a lot of bricked device issues which again is a feeling compared to the past, nothing concrete..

I have been on early access since the very beginning. Barely had a (serious) regression ever.

While, like its predecessor, it does not solve some minor but majorly and growingly annoying issues I've been having for some time now (e.g. this darn media tracker that just will not group songs by albums) I deem this update to be safe to install and to use.

I know, much happens under the hood and behalf of the safety requirements this one big Russian customer.

3.3.0.14 is not a total trainwreck by any stretch.

my 2 cents with an Xperia XA2 (H4413).

It fixed some annoying bugs I experienced yesterday (when I bought the phone and installed sailfish) - usb tethering works out of the box - whatsapp plays videos

have to test for a longer period... but it seems to have improved my experience!

Xperia XA2 dual sim.

Some things are better: eg. signal is able to attach and send pictures/movies, also files, netflix app finally works...

But also some fails: fullscreen playback fails in opera, stock browser plays videos periodically without update of screen (audio works), and the most annoying one - android screen orientation change stucks until I switch it off and then on in android settings, sometimes it doesn't work until reboot/aliendalvik restart.

I have also lost arrangement of icons in application grid after 2nd reboot after update. P

I actually works around the screen orientation issue in android apps by opening an android app that's only landscape when i want to use landscape in another app and then open a app that is only portrait when i want to switch back to potrait mode in an app. It's not optimal but at least i can force landscape/portrait modes when needed.

I ran into this trap

After a long series of successful updates for the XA2, 3.2.0.20 was the best for me. 3.3 has brought some improvements and .... bugs that nobody wants. The bad news is there is no way back. Thanks for the fish.

I am very happy about the upgrade. I been also not sure about this upgrade (to do it) after so much posts about this release that I wanted to do a post just to put some positiveness about this release ([3.3.0.16] [XA2] Thank you for a really good update [personal opinion][not a question])

I do not have any new issues from 3.2 and only issues went away from 3.2 to 3.3 (my experience)

I also did a fresh install on Xperia XA2 DualSim. This fixed my broken previous install. Jolla made with 3.3.0.14 a good work! Nextcloud is working for me :))

I noticed the same thing: a big pack of big bad wolves after this early bird. Decided to set my updater to manual mode and wait a bit even after release.

I guess it's safe to update now that 3.3.0.16 was released to all. Just be sure to read the release notes, there are a few things that can semi-brick the device (all of which are apps from OpenRepos, though).

I updated my Xperia X two days ago, so not EA. Had the flight mode bug after and the zypper workaround didn't worked for me. I had to reflash and I was a bit disappointed that the flight mode bug wasn't fixed during EA at least
