I've done the following:

  1. Flashed my Android 9 running Xperia XA2 with the official 3.2 image. At the time, I didn't have a microSD card inserted.
  2. Used it for a couple of days and decided to buy a license
  3. Set up a Jolla store account
  4. Upgraded to 3.3.0.14 through Settings - Sailfish OS updates
  5. Activated encryption through Settings - Encryption. Didn't back any user data up
  6. After rebooting into the encrypted phone (entering a PIN etc. worked) I saw that the lock screen background didn't match the ambiance wallpaper.
  7. Tried to change the ambiance but it didn't work no matter which I picked
  8. At this point, I went into Settings - Reset device and did a reset
  9. After rebooting, I ended up in a non-encrypted 3.2 installation
  10. Updated to 3.3.0.14 again
  11. Upon booting into 3.3.0.14, couldn't see the Encryption option in Settings anymore. Obviously tried rebooting a few times too.

I only upgraded my Jolla phone, not my Xperia X. Settings -> Encryption never appeared.

@vaskas
Step 6: When booting up an encrypted phone, there is first the security code dialog for unlocking the encryption - this dialog has always a black background. Depending on your SIM/PIN settings, there is sooner or later another security code dialog for unlocking the screen - this dialog obeys the ambience colours.

Steps 8-9: Sailfish factory reset reverts the OS of the phone to the version that was flashed to it previously. Then the phone has the features of that OS release. In this case, there was no encryption for XA2 in OS version 3.2.1, so that explains why the said menu item was missing.

Step 11: This should not be possible.

@vaskas: I repeated your whole sequence with Xperia XA2 and it worked correctly. In the end, at step 11, I have Settings > Encryption in the phone.

@objectifnul: It worked as expected because we have added the encryption to Xperia devices only. See https://together.jolla.com/question/222221/release-notes-330-rokua/#222221-update-version-history

@jovirkku thank you for looking into the issue!

In step 6, I first entered the encryption PIN (on the dark screen), then the unlock PIN. The unlock screen wallpaper didn't match the ambiance wallpaper. I suspect it was because I didn't back up the user data and / or didn't have a microSD card installed.

Step 8-9. Yep, this is understandable.

Step 11. I have now updated the post with the screenshots.

Anyway my intention was to do another flash of 3.3 with fastboot when it comes out of EA.

This issue is probably caused by a download failure of some kind.
If Settings > Sailfish OS update cannot bring any updates, then the command line may help:

devel-su
version --dup

You will need the developer mode for this.
