Hi all,

I bought an Xperia 10 plus in February and I followed the install instructions carefully. It now runs Sailfish OS Nuuksio v3.2.1.20 and I just realised that the speakers at the bottom of the phone do not work. I cannot find a scenario in which they do work. UPDATE: an upgrade to v3.3.0.16 didn't solve the problem.

I called myself with another phone and put my phone in handsfree and turned the volume to the maximum setting. I can only hear something if I put it back into non-handsfree mode.

If I go to settings and choose different ringtones, I hear nothing. Sliding up the slider to 100% doesn't make a difference. If I plug in a headset, I can hear the ringtones, but not when I unplug it.

Watching a video on YT also doesn't work (unless of course I plug in a headset).

I don't think I ever had audio via the speakers following the installation. I think they worked before the install, but I cannot go back in time to make sure. I did follow the recommendation of trying out all the functionality prior to the install. Vibration still works, so I still noticed incoming calls, which explains why I didn't notice this issue until now.

I've tried restarting the device but it hasn't made any difference.

I used the CSD test app as suggested below. I was able to hear some very soft sound during the 'Speaker playback' test with my ear pressed against the speaker. I heard nothing during the 'Stereo speaker playback' test. The volume was on its max during both tests.

Does anyone have a possible solution or an idea for further analysis? Or is the only possibility that this is a hardware issue?

Silly comment time; have you tried rebooting the device?

Not silly at all. I should've mentioned that I've tried that already (I normally even switch off my phone in the evening and boot it in the morning).

I've updated your question to reflect our conversation about restarting the device :)

That makes sense, thanks!

@Gulltoppr: OS version 3.2.1 had issues with audio routing. In particular, they affected phone calls. Your comment on the YT player is a bit concerning. It might be a question of a hardware failure.
OS update 3.3.0 brings some fixes. It is difficult to foresee if they help in your case. Each device model has different audio configurations.

Please consider testing the loudspeaker with a built-in test program of Sailfish (this should indicate or rule out potential hardware issues):

The loudspeaker of your phone can be tested using the CSD test app of the phone.
1. Go to Settings > About product.
2. Tap "Build" 5-6 times as quickly as you can. Wait a moment.
3. CSD app will startup. Accept the disclaimer.
4. Tap 'Individual tests'
5. Scroll down until you see the group 'Audio' on the right.
6. Tap 'Loudspeaker playback'. If there is a headset or a Bluetooth device connected to your phone, disconnect them now. Tap 'Start' then.
7. You should hear a test tone with increasing and decreasing frequency from the speaker. If not then try to increase the volume level by applying the key on the side of the phone.
8. Tap 'Stereo loudspeaker playback' (not applicable to Jolla Phone). Tap 'Start'.
9. You should hear a voice saying "Left speaker, right speaker" and hear the sound from the corresponding speaker.
10.. Close CSD app.

Today, my speakers suddenly started to work again. Well, they worked all the time, but at a volume that was extremely low (not just soft, but more like 0.0001% of whispering levels). It came completely out of the blue. I don't know the original cause of my problem. I also don't know what ultimately solved my problem. I do know that I'm very happy now and that I like some of the ring tones.

I'm also very happy with all the suggestions I received from @Edz and @jovirkku. They gave me hope, and also prevented me from spending money on a new phone.

Unfortunately, the spontaneous recovery came to an end. Today, my phone stopped making sound again. I rebooted it 10 times or so and plugged and unplugged the charger a number of times. That didn't work. I tried squeezing it near the speakers (to the extend that I dare to) and knocking it on the back.

Finally, the knocking did the trick and the sound came back. So I guess, that's it's a mechanical problem or a loose connection somewhere after all. I'd love to fix this permanently, but I guess that's more something for a repair man (if possible at all).
