I reflashed my phone using this guide: https://together.jolla.com/question/222126/guide-installing-sailfish-x-on-xperias/ When I got to '3.3 Increasing the "root" LVM volume size', my problem started. When the phone rebooted, not only could I not make telnet connection but I couldn't even turn the phone off. It is just stuck in the state where it says 'Recovery: connect USB cable and open telnet to address 10.42.66.66'. What can I do to recover?

What can I do to recover?

At first be more verbose how far you got.
To me that sounds only that the recovery image was booted and it waits for a telnet connection...

Hard shut down/reboot is vol up + power button for 3s.

Thanks. The procedure requires removing the battery. The Xperia 10 Plus does not have a 'user replaceable' battery so it entails opening up the device. This is something I wanted to avoid. Inconvenient for the experimenter. But I bit the bullet and did it and then reflashed to a working phone. Maybe I could have just waited for the battery to go flat.

Oh, some verbosity in your answer at least:
it is a Xperia 10 we are talking about!
No idea where you read about taking out battery (valid only only for Jolla1/C)...

This here states:

3.3 Reverting phone back to normal stateIt is **crucial** to follow the below steps to successfully revert your phone from Recovery Mode back to normal state:1. Select option 6 'Exit' in the Recovery Mode menu.2. Disconnect the USB cable from the phone.3. Press Vol Up key down, keep it pressed and then also press the Power key. Release both keys whn you feel the vibrator play.4. Turn the phone on. It is now back in the normal state.
