Android apps that in principle should trigger notification sounds like e.g. WhatsApp or Kontalk don't do it on my device. They only produce notification icons (when in background) when new messages arrive.

These apps offer to choose a ringtone or a notification sound, but the only ones I can choose from is "Default ringtone" and "silent". I read that one could put sound files into the /sdcard folder, so that the Android apps could see them and offer them to me, but that doesn't work (i.e. they aren't offered, only the two default choices that don't produce any sounds).

The Android apps do play sounds in general, e.g. youtube, spotify, etc. so that is not the problem.

Does anyone run into the same problem or is it just my device?

EDIT: somehow the problem gets "healed" after installing a ringtone app (see answers by domnk and juergbi). Even better: Picking a notification sound still works after deinstalling zedge. This doesn't explain what causes the problem or how the solution works, but at least it's a usable workaround.

Answer (December 2015):

SailfishOS 2 / AlienDalvik / Lipstick uses a whitelist (/usr/share/lipstick/androidnotificationpriorities) for notifications from Android apps.

See this answer for how to add K9-Mail, Conversations, Threema, TextSecure and other apps to it: https://together.jolla.com/question/109180/feature-request-add-missing-apps-to-the-chat-application-list/?sort=votes

Same problem here. And it's a serious one for me because my friends make extensive use of Whatsapp (and Mitakuuluu isn't reliable yet).

One workaround is to install an Android app that includes notification sounds, e.g., 'WhatsApp Tones'. Selecting a sound in that app will make it available in the WhatsApp settings menu.

Why is this closed? There is a problem that has a workaround but the problem itself is not fixed.

@J24 I turned the question into a wiki post. Feel free to reopen

@tad thanks! Just need 4 more karma before I can do anything about it, tho. For me it seems like Alien Dalvik simply lacks default ringtones. In that case I'm guessing the fix should be relatively easy. I think by default AD should use Jolla ringtones.

with threema it works for me now.

i installed the app zedge, this should work with an other app like this too. i choosed a notification ton in zedge. after that in threema preferences it was possible to set this tone. when threema is in background - of an other android app - i receive a notification sound.

The Zedge solution worked for me. Thank you!

the zedge solution really works. When you choose a ringtone/notification sound you'll get the question whether you want to use file based selection or zedge, but don't use zedge! It suddenly works with the normal sound picker and shows the standard sounds as well as the sounds downloaded within zedge. Even better: It still works after uninstalling zedge!

same here. there are only notifications in the event view. not on the top screen like SMS or e-mail. and also no sounds.

=> not suitable.

is this really a bug? see tags. or just the way android apps run on jolla?

others reported that they can choose notification sounds within their android apps and that they do get sound notifications. But maybe their experience is the exception and ours the rule ;-) until this is not cleared up this question gets a bug tag

I have the same problem on my device. Sound works in general with android apps, but android apps don't trigger a sound or vibration notification. Ideas to solve this issue?

You might want to have a look at this post which explains why Android apps might not trigger notification sound when running in foreground (of the alien dalvik runtime)

I knew that post. But the problem is not about apps running in foreground, it's about android apps that are running in background within the Android context. When in background, they consistently produce notification icons in the event view, but never notification sounds and I haven't found any explanation for this yet.

Okay, you are right... sound similar, but seems to be something else.

not entirely accurate in my case. the post on TMO is accurate up to about 1 hour. after that whatsapp client logsoff. on my other android phone i can see my jolla phone user as offline (since 1 hour ago). any messages i send to the jolla phone user will not trigger anything on whatsapp there until i bring whatsapp back into focus. the same for other IM apps like skype. there seems to be some suspend happening.
