The notification LED can show multiple colors and has some built in notification patterns. This wiki tries to keep track of what do they mean. Of course, the list below is only valid as long as you do not customize these patterns.

Note: Most indications are only valid while the screen is switched off. (Are there any situations with the LED on while the screen is on?)

green blinking

  • Rapidly blinking during display power up: User interface is not responsive. [1]
  • While display is switched off: An incoming call has not been answered.
    It does not matter whether the handset is in PC connection mode and/or battery is charging.

blue blinking

  • SMS or IM received and not yet read.

yellow blinking

  • Email received and not yet read.

red steady

  • Handset is powering down.

red blinking

  • Rapidly blinking during display power down: User interface is not responsive [1]

  • Blinking red is not a problem - it just means that the battery really is quite empty and is charging before it boots.[2]

slowly blinking white

  • PC connection mode (battery is charging)
    See also "green blinking" above, "missed incoming call".
  • USB connection in charging-only mode but battery already fully charged.

white steady

  • Battery is charging

cyan steady

  • Screen is about to turn off.
  • It might be this is only used when the same information can't be shown by dimming the screen because screen is already at a very low brightness. [3]

@Gianluca, you forgot the yellow blinking light for unread email.

Yeah, right. I was just checking the file before writing something wrong when I received and email, and now my Jolla is blinking yellow :D

I would like there would be additionally more different LED colours for different notifications/actions, like purple or cyan for example.

Btw: while blinking it should stop charging - why is "Akku" (in german for battery, in Settings) showing that the phone is still charging?

You can configure (on your own risk of course ;) ) more colours in file /etc/mce/20hybris-led.ini

PatternDeviceOn = blue
PatternDeviceSoftOff =Cyan
PatternPowerOn = grey75
PatternPowerOff = red
PatternCommunication = Magenta
PatternCommunicationCall = green
PatternCommunicationIM = blue
PatternCommunicationSMS = blue
PatternCommunicationEmail = yellow
PatternCommonNotification = cyan
PatternWebcamActive = ~ DarkRed
PatternBatteryCharging = gray50
PatternBatteryFull = white
PatternCommunicationAndBatteryFull = white
PatternBatteryChargingFlat = ~ SkyBlue1

But you need to understand what you are doing, since you might adapt as well other files.

Yellow blinking is not working for me, at least I get green blinking for incoming mail (same as for missed call).

My two pence: for the fourth time, my Jolla is about to be bricked and will probably need factory reset very soon. Every time this happened before, it was announced by a warning sign consisting of a double (or triple) appearance of the lock screen at boot time (first unresponsive, then normal) with fast flickering green LED (nothing to do here with missed calls) after first short appearance of unresponsive lock screen. Recovery mode option 5 didn't fix the issue (currently running Uitukka 1.1.0.39)

How is this LED signal to be interpreted?

There is also some information at the: Jolla User Guide - Lock screen and icons (Search the webpage for "LED at the bottom")

I've just had a strange behavior of my Jolla: suddenly Sailfish OS got blocked and the screen turned black.. And the led started flashing white very very quickly.. Any idea?

Did you have to restart your phone, or did the system reappear after a couple of seconds?

lakutalo ( 2016-05-24 10:22:13 +0300 )edit

none of both :) The system didn't restart by itself and I had to remove the battery.. Then, rebooted, and the a sudden restart, now ok..

Happened to me a while ago. I'll link my thread.
