I would like a wired connection for updates etc. I can buy a usb to ethernet adaptor/cable, but I don't know if the system currently supports the necessary ethernet capability, which is present in many Android systems. Is this currently possible, or can it be added?

You can use developer mode and forward data through your pc for this.

Given that currently USB Host / OTG is not supported, the answer is: not supported. Vote here:

With Sailfish being Linux, I'm pretty sure that it would work, given the hardware was there. WIth the phone, however, you're on the wrong end of the USB connection. The phone is not a USB host, but a USB gadget. And connecting two USB gadgets together just won't work. USB OTG would be the only way to make the USB gadget act like a USB host.

No it doesn't work. I bought a Rj-45 to micro usb connector and plugged it in, nothing happened. I would need this function also.
