Here maps development
Hey Sailors,
the developer of Jolla maps, the swedish company Appello, made an announcement, that they are moving to OpenStreetMap.
What does this means for us and the further development of Jolla Maps?
We have moved to a new Sailfish OS Forum. Please start new discussions there.

nthn ( 2014-04-30 12:19:21 +0200 )editTo my mind, it is they are going to change their cartography, so that it means for us, more waiting time and another point of view about what we thought about our Navigation System. I was very happy using all my Nokia devices with here maps, for me was the best Navigation system. Now I'm using Navfree from Yandex Store with offline open-street maps, is not as best as here maps but at least it is something. I would like to have a native app in Qt for my jolla with offline maps and also manage it from the web page as I did in here.com I'm a bit disappointed in that sense because I thought I would have a better Navigation system by default in my Jolla device, but there is no more chance than wait and using Navfree.
vicentpavel ( 2014-04-30 12:26:17 +0200 )editDon't think it will affect Jolla Maps at all. There is an important difference between a mapping/navigation application and positioning services and map technology. The latter two are directly licensed from HERE by Jolla, not Appello, and thus the OS and any third party application can make use of them. Appello is 'just' a 3rd party that Jolla paid to provide a basic mapping application built on those services and technology. The fact that Appello have changed the technology underlying their own completely separate products is irrelevant, and will not impact Jolla's licensing deal. And I'd also hazard that after delivering the original Maps application Appello have done no further work on it.
strongm ( 2014-04-30 13:25:57 +0200 )editI'm a little disappointed by the lack of turn-by-turn navigation in the standard app. Appello have made this before, so I was hoping this would be offered (paid extra if anything).
But there have been exactly ZERO updates to the Maps app, which is a little disappointing to me.
bilgy_no1 ( 2014-04-30 17:35:37 +0200 )editI would prefer the map data from here, for street navigation the best I know. But app needs improvment. I can walk 300m till the position get eventually updated. Thats just useful if you like to get lost :-). Also offline map data is for me important. Usually I need the map most urgent in areas where data connection is not well or no signal. Would it not be possible to let the user choose? E.g. app with OSM data for free and here data as buyable second choice.
