Distinction between "volume", "ringtone volume" and "default ringtone volume"

To me, it's unclear what's the difference between "volume" (that you can adjust with volume up/down), "ringtone volume" (that you can set with each ambience) and "default ringer volume" (showed it settings).

When I adjust volume to maximal level using volume up button and then change ambiance, I expect that it changes volume to "ringtone volume" level set with ambience, but it don't. And is "default ringtone volume" and "ringtone volume" connected somehow?

The volume selections are odd: changing volume with the volume rocker seems to change nothing at all, everything stays at "Default ringtone volume". Ambiance setting makes some changes, but it seems to be adding to "default" volume instead of working as an independent volume selection.

True, it could be better. I think ringtone volume in settings sets the ringtone and notifications volume and the rocker adjusts the general media volume for example sounds in videos etc. There should be separate settings for both as in N9.

At the very least, when two volume controls are competing for control (say, ringer volume in the Ambiance, vs volume set in Sounds) the OS should be aware of which setting currently takes precedence, greying out the control that will have no effect.

Volume is the sound volume of applications or during a phone call (they are independent). It's not related with the ringtone volume.
Default ringtone volume is the volume of the ringtone when you have no favourite ambience set. Also, the first time you try to set an ambience as favourite, you will see that the "Ringtone volume" of the ambience takes this value by default.
Ringtone volume is the volume of the ringtone associated with an ambience that you put in favourite. Later when you select this ambience, the ringtone volume will be this one.

So for the moment, to change the ringtone volume you have to:

If your current ambience is not set as favourite, go to Settings and change the Default ringtone volume.
If your current ambience is set as favourite, go to Gallery->Ambience->Your_Ambience and change the Ringtone volume.

It's confusing, and as ramoth said, it could use a facelift, but that's how it seems to work for the moment :)

Volume and default ringtone volume are easy to understand and work similarily as on any other platform.

I think that the confusing bit is the Ambiance associated volume. It works as intended, but people just aren't used to having such option. I would prefer leaving as it is for a the time beign. Fix it, if people in general dont get used to it.

It seems when you are selecting a ringtone (either for an ambience or the default tone in settings), playing the ringtone while selecting uses the application volume set by the volume buttons, and not the ringtone volume. Therefore it's not possible to test the ringtone level while setting the tone.

Where it now just says "Volume" in the top bar, it may just as well say "App Volume", "Call Volume", "Ringer Volume" depending on what's being adjusted, according to context.

When the ambience ringtone volume applies, the default volume slider should either a) control the ambience volume, b) be deactivated with the note that ambience volume takes precedence.

To come back to this issue, I believe that this behaviour is not intuitive. Usually the ambiance is more related to the background image and the tones, not the volume itself. I mean, I don't remember the volume level of each ambiance, if every time I want to adapt the volume via gallery, it takes ages and it is not convenient at all.

If I understand this thread correctly- thumbing the "Volume" button all the way down to 0% does absolutely NOTHING to the sound of my phone ringing, text message alerts, voicemail alerts- basically any sound emitting from my phone.

This would explain why when someone kept calling me last night at 4 AM and I thumbed it all the way down (instinctively as I have with every cell phone I've owned for the last 14 yrs), it did absolutely nothing to stop the sounds from coming from my device.

Seems like a pretty major usability failure.

iOS and Android toggle the action of the volume button depending on the phones state:

While handset is idle, volume but. adjust sound emitting from the phone (ringtone, alerts, etc...)
While on a call or playing media with sound, volume but. adjusts speaker volume (Jolla currently does this)
While headphones are in, volume but. adjusts sound to headphones

I agree. The volume buttons should affect the overall volume of the device. All App speciffic/Ambience etc. volume controls could be handled centrally by a mixer app like it is implemented in other OSs.

I agree that it is not convenient not to be able to use the buttons, the description above from bnvk is nice. Furthermore, the ambiance volume minimum is "1" but no sounds are emitted, it is a bug, it should display "Mute" or "0" but not "1"

@Stefanix , we have a problem with a silent ambience. No icon let you know that you are in silence mode in comparison with the note striked in "silence sounds"

How does the alarm clock sound level work in regards to these volume settings? When the phone is set silent from the pulley menu, then it rings at least. But I remember I overslept a good while back because of wrong volume settings, I just cannot remember if I had the ambience volume set as minimum, or if I had the app volume set as minimum when this happened. Which one does the clock alarm obey?
