Using Jolla in Japan [answered]

asked 2014-05-11 16:10:39 +0300

Hi,

This Summer I am travelling to Japan, and I am checking out options to get a pre-paid card. Apparently, phone used in Japan need to be certified and before receiving a sim-card you need to show that it is with some logo showing on the phone (either on the Hardware or some phone information page on the phone I suppose).

I couldn't find any info whether Jolla is certified for use in Japan. I am guessing it isn't?

Japan's Conformity Certification of Radio Equipment http://www.telec.or.jp/eng/services/01.html

One operator stated that the phone needs to support one of the following: WCDMA2100/ UMTS2100/ HSDPA2100. How do I find out if one of these is supported?

Roaming works, and you can get those prepaid sims (which only have a data plan, no phone number due to regulations). If you want faster speed, you might be better off renting a pocket-wifi.

I've never heard of needing to show your phone to get a pre-paid card (sometimes they're even ofered on the street for free). When you get a card, you just get a card, you can use it on whatever phone you like, there's nothing the operators can do about it.

But if they do bug you about it, just borrow someone else's phone to go get the card.

I used Jolla with Finnish SIM (Sonera) in Japan at the beginning of this year, so yes Jolla works in Japan just fine.

I used Jolla with Vodafone CZ SIM card in Japan last week. It worked fine on both NTT DOCOMO and SoftBank 3G networks on Honshu as well as on Okinawa. I didn't tried to use data connection because of the roaming costs - I had local eConnect Japan SIM card in my tablet with WiFi tethering for this. I didn't tried 4G/LTE on Jolla.

EDIT (avdwoude): The eConnect SIM (1GB / 30 days) package worked very well with the Jolla phone.

Just be aware that I didn't tested eConnect Japan SIM card with Jolla - only my Nexus 7 3G 2013 tablet. There is a thread here on TJC which describes problem with similar pre-paid sim card in Japan - b-mobile.

I must say that eConnect Japan provides exellent service. I used them twice - once with Standard Speed Limited Data SIM, once with Low Speed Unlimited Data SIM. Both worked perfectly.

@Pint Thanks for the info. I'd better bring my N9 as a backup. The eConnect service seems like a good fit with what I need, so I might be the first one trying their service with a Jolla.

I used the eConnect SIM card, which worked flawlessly on my Jolla. For some reason it did seem to deplete the battery quicker. Not sure why that happened, might be an unrelated issues.
