This post is a wiki. Anyone with karma >75 is welcome to improve it.
On the Linux Tag 2014 in Berlin I met the Navit guys and we installed Navit on the Jolla Phone.
It runs great, lets use this thread to discuss on how to install it and how to use it:
Open wih Browser: http://download.navit-project.org
Go to:
navit
android
svn
Or use directly:
http://download.navit-project.org/navit/android/svn/
Download e.g. navit-svn-5774.apk
Go with "File Browser" or "Cargodock" Application to 'Download' folder an install it.
Notes:
- Installation failed while there was not GPS available during installation. This may be a Jolla or
navit bug, please report back.
- To download maps press on in the map windows the dotted line in the lower
left corner until the menu appears. Then download your map. Due to the
map size use WLAN
- Sometimes the navigation application does not move
to the current position. In this case a phone restart helped. This may be
a jolla bug too. Please report back.
- When the selected target position is outside the downloaded map, no route
seems to be drawn by navit.
- I would be glad, if we get this application
working as native application, the android version just uses a
compatibility layer.
- Finding the target location to navigate to was sometimes difficult.
"target position is outside the, no": There is missing a word before the comma, please add it for the sentence to be understandable.
Is it possible for such open source apps to use the same set of maps? I.e. if NavFree is installed already, I would not want to have navit storing the required Open Street Maps again – it should just reuse the maps already in local memory.
jgr ( 2014-05-12 22:18:10 +0200 )editLooks like Open Street Map should standardize where the maps are found on the mobile. Might still not work, because NavFree and Navit might store the same maps in different data formats.

I could install and start the app. However, when I try to dowload a map nothing happens, i.e. the dowload progress bar is shown, but no map is downloaded, although I have a very good connection to the Internet via WLAN.
Jörg ( 2014-05-25 17:23:50 +0200 )editMap download does not work for me at the moment either. It worked before fine with this navit installation. Maybe the map server is currently not accessible.
m_josenhans ( 2014-05-25 18:50:25 +0200 )editIt seems to be the map server which had problems. It now works for me again.
