At the moment, while searching for a person, it is possible to "filter" contact by the first letter. It seems like "options"-grid is static and not based on contacts I have. For example, half of my contacts written using Cyrillic alphabet. The only way to see them is search or filter by "#" and scroll... not really friendly.

It would be nice if "first letter"-grid would be based on language(s) used to name contacts, NOT LOCALE SETTINGS AND RESPECTIVE ALPHABET (I like my locale set to English, but I want to keep my contacts in English, Finnish and Russian and be able to filter using different alphabets).

IMHO it should ideally only show letters that have existing contacts.

Maybe the choice was to keep few letters big enough to tap easily: even with non-English names that use Latin alphabet the 'special letters' are found under same letter without diacritics, like nordics Ä,Ö fall under A, O, which some may not like it and e.g. in Finnish is even grammatically wrong.

@simosagi: if your phone is using a Finnish locale, you should be seeing the nordic letters in the alphabet selector grid - is that not what you're seeing?

No I use English locale (my optimal locale is always wherever possible en_DK.utf8).
But that's not a good reason why I should not see letters not belonging to English alphabet, if I happen to use them.

We have an existing proposal to add any letters required to categorize existing contacts, rather than to group them under the catch-all '#' grouping.

Internally, we have not come to an agreement on how this should be handled; please vote for this issue if you think this is a better option.

Yes contacts app.should be able to provide any letters needed to.sort them (and only those in the alphabet list, i.e. if none of my contacts start with Y don't show it at all)

I wonder how confusing will it be if only some alphabet letters are shown :/

I just wonder, how can it be confusing to someone to know (or remember) which letters come after which, even if some letters are missing in between :P

I am after muscle memory based navigation. If you know that P goes after O, you will click to the right of O when you need P. But then again it may or may not be confusing, That's why I wonder.

Well, I use my eyes and muscles in combination to do the navigation, I tend to touch things that I've seen. Your milage may wary ;)

I would suggest (like many others) getting rid of the alphabet grid altogether and just keeping the search field displayed. The search finds a given contact better than the alphabet grid.
