When I was clicking a link in Tweetian, with Sailfish version 1.0.5.16 and before, it opened a new tab in the browser, which I think should be the normal behaviour.

But when I do the same with any new OS version (since 1.0.7.16) the url is opened in the last opened tab so you loose the loaded page. With this behaviour tabs are useless to me.

update: released with SFOSv2.0.2.51

I, too, prefer the pre-1.0.7.16-behaviour of the Jolla Browser, that is:

  • Jolla Browser not yet opened:
any links triggering the Browser to open opens in/over whatever was there before (if all tabs were closed, before the Browser was closed, this opens a new tab and is the only tab opened)

  • Jolla Browser is opened, and minimised to Cover on Home screen:
any links triggering the Browser to open opens a new tab

  • if the Jolla Browser is closed, all tabs are preserved;
it's easy to use the Pulley option Close all tabs, and it's better that the previous tabs are preserved in cases of involuntary closings
    (presumable memory hog)

This way, I could have the Browser opened, while simultaneously checking my Twitter feed and opening interesting links and basically "saving them for later"; if the link I opened wasn't something I wanted to save for later, I just closed the Browser – the next link I'd open would open _over_ that last link – and if I wanted to save it for later, I just left the Browser minimised, forcing the next link to open in a new tab.

(This comment was added right after the 1.0.8.19 release, which kept the Browser behaviour introduced in 1.0.7.16 – i.e. everything opens in the same tab, user must manually open a new tab (_and_ load a page in it) to force the next link to open in another (that manually opened) tab.)

(addendum: Of course I still want the "remembers position, and doesn't reload tab content"-parts of the 1.0.7.16 update, though.)

Added "since" to question title and description to make the question better reflect also the later and current versions of the SailfishOS. Hope it's ok?

Yes it is, thank you to have done it.

This current behaviour is soooo irritating! Please, Jolla, make this at least as an option ("Open external links in a new tab") ?

Now that there are other improvements in place for saving memory (Vaarainjärvi), could this "pre-1.0.7.16-behaviour" be returned ?

Actually the change was intentional in 1.0.7.12 (Saapunki) to minimize the memory footprint with the browser as each tab consumes memory. (New feature: Switching between browser tabs remembers your last position and no longer reloads the tab content).

I understand opening tabs can quickly fill the memory but I preferred the previous behavior.

The new no-reload-remember-position thing is great, but in this I agree with @unai_i. I don't think a browser should ever replace a page you have open with something else unless you explicitly tell it to do so.

Yes, this was done to conserve memory. We know that this is not ideal solution, but we are working on further memory savings and try to allow the behaviour again later perhaps via an explicit setting.

Ok, good to know that you're on it. :)

actually this makes tabbed browsing less usable than before - this is a typical example of a situation where I want to make use of "real" tabbed browsing...

Looks like they have fixed this in the current development version of the browser:

"Open external urls in new tab"

https://github.com/sailfishos/sailfish-browser/commit/3fe19d4a7d7b38da4f1d2c181d9efaa61b5cb838

I guess it will be part of the next update after 2.0.1/Taalojärvi

Yes, 2.0.2 is the current plan for the change.

Oh that's great news! I hope they turn into reality soon.

I can confirm this works on the Jolla C. I was waiting for this since the behavior changed. Thank you!

Any signs of the update for Jolla "Originals"?

If I open a new tab via the pulley and my connection (and the page load) is slow due to bandwidth (2 or 3G or fully-busy shared WLAN) then the new tabs that are not fully retrieved/loaded get mixed up, possibly if browser memory assignment is inappropriately staged or reserved while other pages load. The loaded pages blank into empty tabs while the slow loading page slowly loads or times out.

This was meant to be a comment so I tried to make it group-editable.

A "new" option to implement this just occurred to me! What if the behaviour of external links would be similar to link behaviour inside browser: a tap on link would open the link on top of whatever was there "on top" in the browser. A long tap would open a menu with an option "Open in a new tab" ?

I don't think that's possible, since it would have to be implemented in the menu structure of each app? It should simply open in a new tab. Period.
