AFAIK it isn't possible yet to add new XMPP contacts via their XMPP ID in the people or messages app. This is a very important feature, e.g. if you're around somewhere and want to add someone as a contact.

We also need the possibility to confirm or decline ingoing contact requests, which are necessary for other people adding us to their contact list. Having to use a desktop client doesn't only suck but is also ashaming for a phone promising real XMPP support.

Also important for people who just want to get started with XMPP. I have spent a lot of time trying to figure out how XMPP works on my Jolla, only after asking in here I found out that I need another client to actually get into touch via XMPP. This was by far the worst user experience I've had (so far) on this otherwise great product...

Right now the xmpp situation is very limited, yes, and I can only expect it to improve. A related question is about multiuser chat (MUC).

Have we ever gotten an official answer on this topic anywhere?

I suppose that since Telepathy can handle all of this, the only thing that is missing is to expose this in the UI (e.g. by adding XMPP addresses just like phone numbers etc. are added in the contact details). Am I missing something that makes this a lot harder than it seems to me?

My guess is that the priority is with the big commercial chat protocols. ...which truly is a pity.

I can't remeber a "big" chat protocol to be added recently. But with Mitäkuuluu, we lost probably the most important one and now we don't have any serious alternative.

I wish Jolla would just open-source the components for which they don't have the resources to drive development themselves.

That's my app :) and yes, it should be able to do all of the things requested by OP.

Unfortunately, it's not useful for anything else at the moment, but this was one of the most annoying missing features from Jolla's XMPP support, so I implemented it first.
