What features would you like to see in the future for Recovery Menu?

I'd welcome some clonezilla-like backup functionality - this'd be the ultimate way of keeping a backup of everything on the device.

1. Create an image of the entire system and save it to the SD card
2. Read such an image from the SD card and flash it to the device

And of course, you could use this tool to statisfy those who want to mess with their boot loaders:

1. Option to unlock the bootloader (by entering the device lock code if any)
2. Option to re-lock the bootloader

Target mode: expose the device internal storage and the SD card as standard USB disks: this might be very useful for some recovery attempts or other system backups (even though it will probably only make sense for users that have a Linux machine, given the filesystem used in the internal storage).

Like Boot to bare CLI w/ vkb enabled? Or rescue mode sshd (that allows one to reach the device via WLAN if GUI doesn't boot anymore)?

Internet Recovery. List available Wi-Fi access points, allow the user to select one & enter the password. The device then proceeds to download a firmware image, flash it, and reboot.

Cons: requires a soft keyboard to enter Wi-Fi password. However, such a keyboard will be required anyway to enter e.g. lock code.

Pros: since the device itself is the one requesting the firmware image, it can automatically select the right image for the device model. Additionally, images might be keyed to a specific device's IMEI/SN, preventing 'unathorized' sharing of the image files.

Optional features:

• Ability to recover more partitions than just '/'. Device may create checksums of partitions and redownload those that are damaged.
• Download latest stable version of the operating system instead of always reverting to stock software.

New Recovery Menu in 1.0.3.8, Naamankajärvi, now includes bootloader unlocker, shell access and btrfs recovery options.

My Preference -

1. Periodic Snapshot driven restore including identified data locations
2. Option to do recovery from cloud or microUSB (OTG) connected mass storage

1. In a situation when the recovery failed, offer an option to boot into a tiny rescue system that's basically a command shell with some file system tools. Whatever options the user might have from there... it's more flexibility than pre-defined functions from a menu.
2. If this fails, offer a flash mode that resets the device to the current OS image downloadable from jolla.com. (Flashing to be initiated and performed from pC, of course.) Whatever it is you build into a recovery menu, theres no guarantee it'll work on a massively broken device. A complete reflash can be something very comforting.
