[Bug] Not able to switch ambience / TOH not recognized due to "broken" picture in Gallery

Update 08.01.2015: Now we are at least two who ran into this bug. I think this bug should really be fixed, because it is very hard to find the cause of this problem.

You would not think that a Picture could lead to such a problem that you cannot switch your ambience and rather do a factory reset, just to see the problem reappearing after you load your backup on your phone again.

I hope someone from Jolla will contact me and/or @Ant to get a Picture that leads to this problem.

Update 15.07.2014:

After I reset my Jolla the second time, I walked through the reset process step-by-step to find out, what causes the problems with my ambiences / TOH.

I found out that a single picture (located at ~/Pictures/) caused the problems. A friend of mine took this picture with her Samsung Galaxy and sent it to me using Bluetooth. I think, the problems caused from the EXIF data of this picture, because when I overwrite them using Gwenview the problems disappear.

I can send this picture to Jolla Care, if it would help to debug this error.

Original post:

Hello everyone, I hope someone can help me.

When I try to switch my ambience through the gallery app or through the fast-ambience-switcher, nothing happens. I already did a factory reset and went through the update process. After the last update, I installed the snow white ambience and I think, after that step the problem appeared. Furthermore, my first one TOH doesn't get recognized: I am not able to install it's ambience (the TOH id changes in settings, but there is no notification / error / ...)

This problem seems not to be related to the latest update, because I already noticed this error last week.

Installing / removing the ambiences using pkcon / store client doesn't help, either (except of black background after removing the snow white). But now I don't see the snow white ambience anymore in the gallery, even though it is active currently.

Thank you very much! A friend of mine had exactly the same problem. After unsuccessfully trying to restart ambience-service, reinstalling default ambiences and so forth, the removal of the picture taken with another phone was finally the solution. If Jolla support needs another of those picture files that break the ambiences, just reply.

I never got a reply from Jolla :( this should really be fixed, because it very hard to know, why ambience switching does not work in the first place.

This bug or a similar one has been reported here by yet another user: https://together.jolla.com/question/79323/bug-ambiences-not-changing/

With the new information I investigated a little bit further:

The EXIF information that seems to cause the problem is "Orientation". With ExifTool I could read the the value of this property and it is read as "Unknown (0)". This is no problem for the display of the picture though. But this prevents the ambience from being changed. It is no longer possible neither via gallery nor via home screen. After I edited this value manually and changed the value into "Rotate 90 CW", it worked.

Perhaps @ejjoman can check whether this was also the problem with his picture.

I agree with @ejjoman that this is a bug that should be fixed by Jolla soon as it is very hard to detect.
