i've been playing around with the terminal for some time now, although i have not a lot knowledge yet... however i found the keyboard to be quite decent in terms of available buttons - so this is mainly a question for the community: is there a way to use the virtual keyboard of the terminal as an alternative keyboard system-wide?

Not directly. Fingerterm's keyboard is pure QML built in to the app, whereas the system keyboard is based on maliit. A maliit plugin that would offer similar functionality to fingerterm's keyboard may be possible though.
