Android applications are not able to access contacts. This can be clearly seen in WhatsApp where one can not create new chats because it cannot see any contacts. Already open chats show the phone number instead of the chatpartners name.

For whatsapp you can use mitakuuluu https://openrepos.net/content/coderus/mitakuuluu I found it rather a good thing Android cannot access everything that is used in Jolla.

It seems that the new update 1.0.7.16 - Saapunki has fixed this problem. At least for the exchange contacts, they do appear in Android apps now.

Updated to 1.0.7 today and the situation did not improve with threema for android. With sailfish 1.0.5 threema was able to display contact pictures, while it is not with 1.0.7. So at least something is not working as before. Maybe the reason is in sync between the 'two worlds', maybe because of different file locations after the update.. I don't know. Still figuring out if something can be solved via re-installing, rebooting, re-establishing, whatsorever...

Awesome. Now the question is, how would I go about blocking blocking Android applications from reading the adress book, as I really liked that "feature".

For Whatsapp follow these steps:

  1. Make sure "Settings/Contacts/Show all contacts" is checked under Whatsapp application.
  2. Hide SIM contacts on People application by unchecking "Show SIM contacts automaticially" under "Settings application/Apps/People". Import contacts "From SIM card" under same section if you need.
  3. Ask one of your contacts to text you on Whatsapp.
  4. Open People application and see details of this contact.
  5. Pull down and click "Link".
  6. Start adding links via "Add more Link" option at the pull down menu.
  7. Select all your contacts and tap "Accept".
  8. Now unlink all other contacts one by one and revert the previous step.
  9. Go Whatsapp application and tap new conversation icon as regularly you do.
  10. Tap "Contacts Help" button at the bottom.
  11. Tap "Show invisible contacts" and check "Use all contacts, not just visible ones."
  12. Go back and check if all your contacts are there.

Assuming that Whatsapp has access to my phone contacts, do we know if it downloads phone numbers only or it also gets all the existing contact fields, e.g. bday, notes, address, email, etc?

Can we have a finer control please, i.e. what fields and which contacts android apps can access? Similar issues applies for photos, notes, emails, accounts, etc.

  • All contact details of People application seems reachable on Android side.
  • Control mechanism just exists for if an application can access data or not. Partial authorization is big deal and needs some additional touches I think.

By chance I found out that the not syncing of (google) contacts to android whatsapp is solved by marking and directley unmarking the contacts as favorites in the people app

This issue still happens to me occasionally. Most of the time my contacts appear in WhatsApp, but sometimes they aren't there a.d my conversations revert back to phone numbers. A reboot seems to fix it.

I have the same problem. All my exchange contacts are not shown in WhatsApp (or other android apps).
