What happens to my answer if the original question is deleted? [answered]

I just noticed that a posting I answered yesterday is gone, totally deleted and I cannot find any trace of it. Is it possible that the original poster deletes a whole message chain?
If this is so, I think it is a bit unfair towards the people who have contributed their time and effort to answer the question or otherwice participate in a conversation.
If there has to be an option to delete a post, I would like to see it work so that only unanswered/uncommented message chains could be deleted by author.
I actually have no idea how "real" deletion of a question works... are you sure it is not just renamed? You can check your profile for all your answers given. Tags that you ignore is another possibility. For everything else, can you give an idea what it was about and tell @eric (who is pinged now anyway)

But it is not really deleted, just marked as deleted and thus hidden from the listings and made inaccessible to others. And it can be restored if needed. How ever with a quick search I couldn't find any deleted questions with your answers. What was the question about?
I agree that it might make sense to prevent directly deleting questions, which have already answers. And user could instead request deletion from moderators.

Basically my concern was the following:
Suppose there's an article/question that attracts a lot of attention, and people give answers that receive upvotes, gaining karma. Then, one day the original poster decides to yank the carpet from under everybody, deleting the message chain.
Now, I sure hope this would not lead to situation where the already earned karma of the participants is voided. If this is so, then the original poster who has not granted the karma in the first place would be able to affect other people's decisions...
