Observations on Bluetooth audio quality

I tested two Jabra devices with the Jolla.

Jabra Halo 2 headset: audio quality for music playback is sub-par. This headset works perfectly with two Macs, an iPhone 4S and an iPhone 5S but is below average with the Jolla.
Jabra BT-3030 headset adapter: this adapts wired headphones to bluetooth, contains a mic and remote controls. Works perfectly with the Jolla.

Since the BT A2DP profile specifies a variety of codecs, including one with DRM, I suspect that in (1) above, the Jabra Halo 2 connection is dropping down to a low performance codec. This may be a compatibility issue between the Halo 2 and Jolla.

Two more devices tested:

Jawbone Jambox. Music playback excellent.
Sony headset DR-BT22. Very good.

did not have time to test mic/remote.

i have a nokia bh 212, quality is ok but not more. during phone calls ist too much bass, it scratches. volume keys dont work, 1 press to end call works

i'm using a bose a2dp headset, too. whenever the headset autoconnects to the jolla sound quality is really bad. but if i disconnect it from the settings menu by tapping the connected device abd then reconnect it by tapping the device again the sound quality improves significantly.

That's actually a good clue to what might be happening.

During the connection establishment phase, the headset has negotiated itself into a low bitrate codec for phone calls.

I'll try the same steps with the Jabra Halo 2 and see what happens.

I don't have my Jolla phones at the moment (travelling). Will try to check it out when I get back home. Haven't been logging in here recently either.

I couldn't test with the Jolla as I'm still out of the country, but I did notice that the Jabra Halo 2 downgrades audio quality with my Mac when I switch the input from "Line In" to "Bluetooth Jabra Halo 2 Mic."

That means the headset's profile for phone calls is definitely downgrading the codec. Strangely that does not happen with the Jabra BT-3030 which has an onboard microphone as well. The latter is much older than the Halo 2.

My two pence (not headset related, but hi-fi) : just connected my Jolla to my Bang&Olufsen hi-fi system (both wired and bluetooth connections tested). Not only it's working seamlessly, but I can say the Jolla audio quality is far from ridiculous.

Little problem with MPEG codec (mp3) for narrowband signals (32 kbps): some unpleasant hiss can be heard from time to time, specially in speech content.
