Cultural Context:
It is the social norm with Indians / Asians to share our resources with friends and family. And saying no is often considered rude. But now that we use our phones to not only talk but also for mobile banking and to read email, for example, I find myself more reluctant to hand over my phone to somebody. But by doing so, I may offend many who don't understand my concern (either due to ignorance about technology or their perception about the nature of our relationship).

Suggestion:
An elegant solution to this would be to have a restricted mode / guest mode.

When this mode is activated, only apps pre-selected by the owner of the phone should be shown and allowed access to. For example, if someone wants to use my phone to make a call, I can activate the restricted / guest mode with only the phone app. Or if my niece wants to use the phone to chat with her friend, I can activate the mode with only the messenger app. Thus, in the restricted / guest mode only whitelisted app would be shown, and all other apps would be "hidden" and be inaccessible.

OR

Allow apps to be password protected with a PIN. So if I have protected the 'Gallery' app, for example, it shouldn't open unless the right PIN is entered.

OR

Create a login system for Sailfish OS that allows the phone to be used by multiple users. Each users app and data resides on their own login / userspace only and should be inaccessible to others.

Duplicate of https://together.jolla.com/question/32412/restricted-userinterface-partymode/

Sounds different but the idea is the same, a phone mode where some restricted actions are available without lock-code entry.

Yes, our ideas are indeed similar, but the use case is different. Can you please make the other thread a wiki so that I can add this info there?

It is exactly the same use-case or what do you think is different, that I said party and you said lend to a friend? My intentions are different the outcome is the same. Add a comment if you like to - I let someone else decide if this is different.

As a comment in your thread shows, yours suggestion conveys the impression that restricted mode is for the owner and not specifically for sharing phones. In fact, no where do you even mention sharing or giving the phone to someone. If you did mean exactly what I am suggesting too, then I suggest rewriting it. (Or make it a wiki and lets draft the idea together, with others too).

@sifartech I'd see that the suggest part in your question would add a great answer to @chemist's earlier question (which, by the way, could be modified, leaving any possible solutions out of the question part and moving those as an answer to your own question). In both/either way, these issues can, imo, be handled under the same question.

@simo It would have been best if the other thread was a wiki as the original post still needs improvement. Suggest that this threads title be used there too as it is more clear. Anyway, I have followed your suggestion and re-posted there. Moderators may please close this thread, if appropriate.
