I think it would be cool to have a kind of "breakout" - other half where all internal signals are available through one ore more standard 3.5 mm female connector. Some protection electronics against shortcut or static shock would be perfect.

I suggest a more generic solution, kind of development kit. It should be an other half with some room for a PCB with some SMDs on. Connecters to all interfaces should be embedded into the TOH plastic, possible to solder some wires there. Furthermore there should be a "tunnel" for the camera. This TOH would be maybe 5mm thicker than the standard one. Users can then decide to connect wires, lead them to the outside and use it primarily in the lab, or fully integrate some circuitry / display / whatever into the available space. Probably it is difficult to print something like this at home with embedded contacts. Therefore Jolla should produce a batch of TOH HW development kits. It would certainly promote new ideas and remove a major hurdle. The required space could be discussed to find the most useful size.

Actually I found that someone has made a breakout board for the connectors on the back as well as a really nice tool for i2c. It can be found here. Scroll down to find a link and you can order 3 boards for $17,50.

what kind of female connector are we talking about? serial? network? usb? console? a special I²C connector? too many standards to keep up with...
keep in mind that there's several pins to be used for a TOH (including several voltage levels) & there's the NFC part too... how are you gonna put all this on some kind of bus?
not to mention that bluetooth should be doable as well (if you need higher bandwidth)

I think of it more like a experimental playground for users who do not have a SMD solder station. A headphone jack should be sufficient for i2c or a serial connection. Maybe different other halfs support different hardware interfaces. It would just be cool to have an interface a software developer can deal with.
barmeier ( 2013-12-29 22:43:11 +0200 )edit@barmeier thruth is that alot of "tinkerers" who actually will proceed to make a TOH, will be the same ones that have the equipment. and the amount of people who would buy such a TOH will be really limited, enough so to not warrant the costs to make such a TOH, IMHO.

I've started making a pin breakout TOH, and its really not that hard to put together yourself

basic process is buy a TOH from shapeways or get someone to 3d print you one, stick some contacts on and some wires, terminate them into a breadboard friendly plug, and there you go, one development TOH.
You can stick on a breadboard if you want and wire it straight in if you like which might be my next attempt
yeah I'm going to wire mine up to a 6 pin plug, you'd have to match the plug with whatever you wanted to plug in really. I'm just going to wire mine up in a straight pin like this
I found a nice i2c sensor board that has an altimeter and barometric pressure sensor that I should be able to run straight off the phone.
