Considering that the used CPU in the tablet seems to have AES-NI support, encryption of the device and SD card would be a nice and useful feature. Probably it won't be complete encryption like with desktop systems due to practical constraints, but optional encryption of the card and user-related data (home directory, log files, etc) on the device should be feasible.

The missing encryption is for me currently the number one flaw in Sailfish OS. So +1 for your question. Although I would propose to close this question because it's a duplicate from https://together.jolla.com/question/2158/optional-encryption-of-the-device/

Thanks for the information about the other question. I opened this question as a feature request for the tablet, as proposed on indiegogo, because I have taken one of the "first sailor" tablets. As long as this stays as a feature request for the tablet... I guess the separation in requests for the software is not always so easy to do. Although it was specifically pointed out that feature requests for the tablet should be done and tagged with the corresponding tags. Question is if there even can be then any legitimate feature requests for the tablet. Software is also for phone, and probably a lot of them already mentioned for the phone, and hardware requests are possibly redundant, because hardware changes might be not possible... Duh... :-)

Actually I just noticed that the CPU does not necessarily support AES-NI. Intel Atom 3700 series has some with and some without support.....

Edit: should have AES-NI as mentioned in datasheet. Seems the tables on the website might be wrong.

We are looking into home and other user data encryption. It will probably look exactly as you asked for it.

SD card encryption has been brought up but it's currently seen as more optional feature. Good thing about it is that it is very isolated use case that can be implemented stand-alone to Sailfish OS regardless of device set up.

I would think that implementing encryption for the SD card is more important, because anyone can remove it and read its contents. Reading from the memory of a locked phone would be much harder.

duplicate of https://together.jolla.com/question/2158/optional-encryption-of-the-device/

it does not matter if there is hardware support for encryption or not, please refrain from duplicating every piece that was already requested for the phone, software is about SailfishOS and not about hardware - we expect everything to be on both for now (some things won't be possible or are not desired to be on both devices)

I did this as feature request for the tablet, as was advised by Jolla staff during Indiegogo campaign. If it is not possible to make software feature requests for the tablet specifically as part of the "tablet development" process (as marked with the tags "jolla-tablet" and "feature-request" like proposed), and as hardware requests were pretty much improbable and were also criticised, I wonder what this specific tags and campaign was about. hardware requests impossible, software requests never acceptable for tablet if anywhere already mentioned for mobile before, and in general not specific for tablet... What is then a valid request at all? Only splitscreen?

hmm good point, but general requests like device encryption is for sure no tablet-only topic - where is the point in duplicating every request there was before with tagged for tablet? What do you need a tablet for that you cannot do with your phone already... most things will be because of screen estate or different hardware but as the tablet has "less" hardware but more screen estate I guess most valid requests are such not active for sailfish yet or point to specific hardware features like a bigger screen
