A couple of questions regarding the quality of the display:

-How much of the SRGB Spectrum does it cover (hopefully 100%)

-What is the contrast (along with black value etc.)

-Brightness(cd/m2)

The iPad Mini for example suffers from a somewhat faded display so it would be exciting if this tablet is able to overcome these limitations, although it may not if the same manufacturer is involved.

Edit: Adding one question, how is the display quality in outdoor use in practice, especially on sunlight?

The latest Jolla Blog post answers this question at least partially. On paper, before laminating, display should have:

  • contrast ratio 1000:1
  • Edit: luminance 460 (see blog comments)

The blog post also states that these values are on paper and valid for the non-laminated display without touch digitizer and glass coating. These will decrease luminance and contras ratio.

The blog post also says that those numbers were for the second display model, i.e. the one used in the devices shown at MWC, but which then were replaced by a third display model in order to solve the problem with yellow spots.

@luen "The third display which has similar specifications to the second display". Also, why would they share information like this for their 2nd setup if the 3rd wasn't equal or even better?

@simo Lower in the comments: "Also on the paper the third display actually has luminance of 460 while contrast stays the same 1000." (sage on July 27, 2015 at 6:59 pm)

@rburkhanov Thanks for sharing that comment, worth an edit actually. Now I'd be interested to hear about the type of films used for laminating - there are ones even adding to the brightness, but the issue in real life use is mostly the reflected light. Luminance may be even a lot lower, if the effective contrast ratio is instead boosted. Something like luminance 350 with 4000:1 contrast ratio would be nice even on sunlight, and might be achievable with high quality laminates reducing the reflections. And how about ruggedization on top of that?

While I would be fine with the iPad mini 2/3 display, I am almost certain that this is not the same. While they are nearly identical in size and have the same resolution, the iPad display is 7.9" and the Jolla Tablet is 7.85". This is not just an error, it is also confirmed with the fact that the iPad has a PPI of 326 while Jolla has a PPI of 330. All this proves that they are not the same model, however it does not guarantee that Jolla will have a better gamut or contrast.

I'd be shocked if this doesn't use the same panel as the iPad Mini 2 and 3. I'm hoping it doesn't due to the iPad's abbreviated color gamut, but I'm being realistic here.

Regardless of colour gamut or any contrast issues, if this is the same LG Display manufactured panel from the iPad Mini 2/3, then that would be great. If you own or have handled the Jolla phone, you'd know just how dire the Truly Electronics display is in comparison. This would be a gigantic upgrade. Hopefully something that will be repeated in the second phone.
