I know that fair production methods (fair money, company that pay taxes, ...) aren't very popular for techies nor the IT industry itself. Nevertheless I like to mention this aspect because I think at least some people might care if the workers that produce the gadgets can life by their own hands work and don't endanger their lives during the production. And there are projects that accepted the challenge in ensuring sustainable production:

Another aspect is a green / ecological production of the device. So energy saving methods and to avoid the waste of energy and materials. Additionally it should be modular and easy to repair/upgrade/extend/... and at the end of lifetime easy to recycle.

Don't get me wrong. I know both goals are pretty hard to achieve and will result in a lot of compromises. But hey, if Jolla wants to become an alternative, alternative approach should get a chance, too :-)

Update: Even if not Jolla and the tablet itself go green, but the green Fairphone is getting Sailfish support.

Excellent suggestion! Fairphone sold a lot of phones based on this idea; it's definitely something that people care about. Nokia, where many of the sailors come from, was one of the pioneers in corporate social responsibility in the tech industry. Hopefully this is something that Jolla can also do...

Talking about Fairphone, I believe there were also ideas for Fairphone running Sailfish. Not sure if that's still going to happen sometime soon.

Don't get me wrong. This is not about CSR or earning (more) money. I guess the opposite will be the case (sell less as the components and production will get more expensive), but than we might have a pone where everybody can be sure, that no worker commited suicide (Foxcon) or that childs had to work.

Good suggestion. This is exactly the reason why I'm not buying a Jolla phone yet. If Fairphone would do a 'Fairtablet', then I'd get it. IMHO Jolla should be a pioneer in this, too.

I deeply prefer using products that embody my personal values, ethics, and philosophies. Agreed.

I got to disagree with this suggestion. While I too think, that a production in the EU should be a long term goal, Jolla is a small startup, who already sells only to a small amount of people. The higher prices following a fair and ecological production would just drive away even more potential customers. Other major companies are part of the arms industrie, pay billions for lobbyism, or try to get rid of the competition by closed systems. Taking that into consideration, Jolla is already way "greener" than its competitors.

As written this is just a suggestion and yes I know the chance is pretty small to get it realized. Anyway, I would like to suggest it and see if somebody shares that idea. I posted 2 existing fair IT projects that are even smaller (Nager=1person) or are also small startups. The majors have no reason to change their existing politics, so it's IMHO up to startups to introduce ethic change in IT production ...

I also think this is important! As a company that claims for itself to act in an ethical manner this should be important!

Ecology and social issues are important!

Somewhere in the jolla forum a member of the staff says, that the hardware, as well as the manufacturer have already been decided, so i don't think changes will be possible. If it would be eco and / or green i'm sure they would have advertised it. And let's be honest, low price (~100$ less than anything comparable) and fair/eco contradicts one another.

As writen and commented above, this is just an idea. Of course you can't produce on discount level, but to be honest, also Apple Inc doesn't sell cheap devics and have their market share? I know that refactoring a complete production is pretty hard .... impossible. But if you have a plan and are willing to, you can create a roadmap to introduce such change. If all the specs are already fixed, why are people than asked to introduce their ideas for Jolla devices? ;-)

dulog ( 2014-12-11 08:25:45 +0300 )edit

No doubt it would be a great idea, I agree, however i just don't think it is likely to happen for this device. But what has apple to do with all that? And I have to correct myself. It seems slight HW changes might be possible, but most of it has been decided. But see for yourself: (https://together.jolla.com/question/63574/request-jolla-tablet-bigger-battery/#post-id-65445).
