Has anyone had any luck with third-party batteries? Which model batteries have you tried? Does Sailfish OS, as distributed on other phones, need any changes to optimally run third-party batteries?

Jolla Customer Care has asked me to share that I've used a battery originally designed for ZTE devices (replacement part no. LI3719T42P3h644161) to boot an unresponsive Jolla handset. The battery was 3.7V, 1850mAh and roughly 64mm by 42mm by 6mm with the correct pins and safety catches to fit into the battery slot. I successfully ran a few apps without issues, but haven't been able to perform further tests.

I haven't checked if Sailfish OS does anything special with regards to battery monitoring, charging and safety. I don't know if it expects to query a controller on the battery's PCB, or has been hard-coded to standard operating conditions (temperature, peak voltage etc.) for the 22B50 from NLT Electronics.

I don't think this is but for the most desperate Jolla users since the form factor of the ZTE battery is different. I wish that Jolla would finally start to sell spare batteries. After more than a year, this is just ridiculous.

That's exactly what I think. The phone is still advertised with an user-replaceable battery. But how should the user replace a battery when they don't sell batteries...

Fellfrosch - by waiting until it explodes, then the user sends the now heavily damaged phone to Jolla, who replace it with a new phone (and obviously new battery).

Has anyone run into a battery showing correct temperature readings for the battery in your tests?

time to close the question ?

Have you seen these batteries on amazon? They even say, that they're jolla compatible german amazon

These are the Polarcell Batteries, the same you can buy in Ebay. They work, no problems so far but don't expect something too much. For me the phone is surviving only a couple of hours longer not even 1 complete day more I can get out of it. I was a bit disappointed but at least I can use my phone as I know it and don't have to recharge it around 15:00 like I had to with the original battery.

Tomas, have you had continued success with your ZTE battery?

Apologies for not replying right away. Following Eric's announcement, I haven't experimented with the ZTE or other 'non-official' batteries. Given how quickly Jolla's official replacement batteries sold out, I might look at this again.

I'll likely wait another week or so, in case Jolla announces another batch of branded batteries. I realise some people don't have any working batteries right now, so I'll post more if the supply situation doesn't change before then. Following Eric's comment above, I would recommend against using other batteries unless you have no other choice.

After further testing I've found my test phone operates perfectly, with two caveats:

  1. Non-frequent, spurious warnings about battery temperature in later Sailfish OS versions (to be expected due to differences with PCBs)
  2. THE BATTERY WILL NOT CHARGE WITHIN THE JOLLA HANDSET.

Results are exactly the same with the Huawei-type battery described here.

So: if you have no working battery for your Jolla handset, I recommend that you either:

  • buy 2✕ (ZTE) LI3719T42P3h644161 — or 2✕ (Huawei) HB5n1h — plus an external charger, and swap batteries every time you need to charge; OR
  • hang out for an official battery. You will either need to wait *ages for Jolla to prepare a sizeable batch, or sit all day on the internet and be ready to snap up a battery from another limited run.

If you're only after a spare, you might want to wait for a full batch of official batteries (or consider the Solar TOH).

I can confirm that the battery is 100% compatible with the HTC Desire 310 battery. Voltage and casing are an exact match.

Does voltage and casing make it 100%, or have you tested something more? Did you test the voltage with a meter on different temperatures and on different charging levels?

simo ( 2015-08-14 19:54:15 +0300 )edit

I checked the voltages with a voltage meter at room temperature. I used it in my Jolla to test if it worked and charged. It did. :-)

willemlaurentz ( 2015-08-14 22:00:07 +0300 )edit

Sounds promising, can you share those metering results in some form? Table?

simo ( 2015-08-14 22:06:01 +0300 )edit

simo, do you really think the Jolla battery is special in any way? It's a plain battery Jolla choose from products available on the market. The more users, the better its availability. Also makes sense to choose a battery that has proven to run well in a widely used handset like the HTC 310.

marsch ( 2015-08-14 22:39:13 +0300 )edit

It's possible, and I really hope it's the same, but if not, there are some factors affecting to the charging pattern which might vary. Especially important is the voltage when fully charged to the reported capacity (not below, not above) which can't be checked from the phone.

Two more replacement 'pattern-part' batteries that should be suitable for the Jolla.

I found this battery while searching for alternate means of juicing the Jolla (I have ordered one of these); eBay Germany

I also ordered one of these from GlobalTech, claiming 2200mAh; eBay Germany

I certainly will.

Looking forward to receiving them.

My mind is always thinking this; "CAVEAT EMPTOR".

Spam Hunter ( 2016-05-23 20:49:37 +0300 )edit

Patona battery, is okay, but being only 2000mAh it tends to run out before the GT battery does at 2200mAh. Both batteries are physically a good fit, with the GT battery being a very snug fit. Both roughly the same price, both good performance for their rated sizes. my fav of the two is of course, the GT battery for it slightly longer life. Both batteries are good for more than 24 hrs but not more than 48 hrs.

My opinion, if the battery physically fits, the device boots, works, doesn't get hot, doesn't switch off or have any kind of unusual fits and starts, then hey!, pick a battery, any battery and get on with your lives! :)

If Jolla are NOT going to produce batteries for its customers, you have little to no choice but to purchase a 3rd party/pattern part battery.

I purchased a Powery battery (thanks @eson for your feedback):

Here some informations:

Specs

  • Jolla : Powery
  • 3,8 : 3,8 [V DC]
  • 2100 : 2100 [mAh]
  • 7,98 : 7,98 [Wh]
  • Lithium-ion : Lithium-ion
  • 4,35 Max : - [V]
  • 22B50 : P9D310 [Model]
  • 63,5 : 63,5 [mm]
  • 50,5 : 50,4 [mm]
  • 5,2 : 5,1 [mm]

Powery's battery fits correctly because the length is identically.

Here some pictures ...

Check how the battery behaves compared to the original one. The one I took (PolarCell) is one day better one day the same like the old one... I barely manage to survive from 7:00 in the morning till 01:00 in the night

PatsJolla ( 2016-06-09 09:50:41 +0300 )edit

I got the Powery from ebay, seems indeed like a perfect fit so far. I can confirm that the thermal sensor is working and the indicated temperature seems correct. I still need to figure out how to make the phone charge the new battery to 100%, so far I reached 64%, then 73% and now 75% capacity

Maybe(tm) If your warranty runs out, I would suggest getting a HTC Desire 310 battery, because that seems to be fully compatible.

jollailija ( 2015-08-10 17:25:23 +0300 )edit

I have the Polarcell battery for Desire 310 in my Jolla. It's a perfect fit physically in Jollas battery department, and so are the voltages and capacity.

jarnose ( 2015-08-10 19:18:58 +0300 )edit

I too have now the Polarcell battery, but it does not seem to be any better than my original battery. Capacity with Polarcell is 71.09% and max. Wh is 5.67.

slehtonen85 ( 2015-08-10 21:56:39 +0300 )edit

@slehtonen85: Did you give it some charge / discharge cycles? Mine is from initially 88.0 to now 96.25. Jolla needs some cycles to determine the real capacity.

Robomike ( 2015-08-10 22:09:38 +0300 )edit

OK, that might help, but I'm still wondering why Jolla do offer the possibility to replace the battery by yourself, but they don't offer spare batteries and say also that a third party battery may void the warranty.

It may be true, that the world doesn't need yet another smartphone, but once in a while the world needs to replace the batteries. If I got that right you can either send your phone to Finland or put a HTC battery in it and loose your warranty? Wow!

Sorry for reviving this old thread but since there is still no official spare parts battery available... I found in ebay the following battery for the htc desire 310:

http://www.ebay.de/itm/PolarCell-Akku-Jolla-Phone-JP-1301-22B50-Accu-Batterie-Battery-Acku-Sailfish-1-/371429134496 as mentioned in this thread https://together.jolla.com/question/126248/where-is-21-update/ this seems to fit in our Jolla.

Does anybody use this battery and can confirm it? I would like to buy it since mine has only 82% capacity left...

This very good test: http://reviewjolla.blogspot.se/2015/09/test-compatible-batteries-for-jolla.html, which can be also found on another thread here on TJC basically tells its the only valid substitution if you cant get a new official battery from Jolla.

how can a producer of a phone not produce any spare parts. This and other reasons is why jolla got in a financial situation anyway. I am more and more disappointed about jolla as an enterprise. Sailfish and the phone are still great, but the company sucks. Everything is constantly sold out and only available on their homepage and BIG MINUS, no original headphones. I mean I dont need the headphones but at least a micro with cable so I can use my headphones.

I know there are some entries here about batteries, but:

What is the actual (2016) status about a compatible battery?

The originals aren't sold. Which 3rd party battery are known to be nearly compatible (hardware and software qualities)?

Or differently asked:Is there a better option then Polarcell's battery [1]

Thanks, Leon

(thanks for the comments at the original posting) / the "better" is a reference to the linked test: Quote: "... while no better options have been found yet. ". Polarcell's battery seems to have a shorter battery life and is missing correct temperature measurements. Furthermore Giacomo Di Giacomo stated that "... golden batteries do not work properly in the sense that you can only charge them once ...." - so far.

Of all the different batteries in this thread and others, the Powery battery is the only one, as far as I know, that actually comes with correct temperature measurements. I can also confirm that it seems to have a pretty good life cycle. I've used mine since august 2015 and now, it's at 92,57% capacity.

eson ( 2016-06-03 07:06:44 +0300 )edit

@eson Bought it from akkuland. Great fit! After second charge shows over 93% capacity.
