Facebook causes battery drain

I recently moved from a rural area with generally bad network coverage, where my Jolla's battery would barely last a day and I'd need to be extremely lucky to have two days without a reboot (even with folded paper+clean contacts), to a major city with 3G available everywhere except on the subway. Now I've noticed the battery lasts about twice as long and reboots are mostly gone - unless I connect to my Facebook account via the settings menu. If I do that, all the problems return - the battery will drain, the CPU will be under high load and produce heat and after a while Sailfish will reboot. Did you observe this too or is it just me? And if it's a common problem, does anyone know a way to receive and send FB messages without draining the battery or using Messenger for Android?

being "available" to a service requires an on-line internet/data connection in the background, this will increase battery consumption, but it should not be that much, and it should not require rebooting that often.
