Hi, Seems to be stupid, but I wonder what's the mean of the GPS toggle in the settings pane. When the GPS light is on, does this mean:

  • the GPS is on (so always on if I don't switch off by myself)
  • the GPS is enabled when will be on on demand by the applications which use it?

Thanks.

Hi!

The toggle in Settings means the GPS is enabled/disabled. When enabled, it will only be active/running whenever an app using location requires it... then it shows up as a small satellite icon next to the clock.

@eric: I don't quite understand this answer as it essentially paraphrases the question:

Is it 'on' in the sense of constantly updating position data (no matter if an app requires it or not) and sucking battery? Or is it 'on' in the sense of allowing an app to start searching for my position if it's required?

The former would mean once GPS is enabled, it doesn't matter battery-wise how many apps request location data (or how often).
The latter means you can leave GPS on all the time and it will not influence battery lifetime as long as you don't actually start an application that requests GPS positioning.

Thanks Eric, but I don't really understand your answer, but that could be because of some missing knowledge on my side.

On the N9, for example. I've never touched any GPS toggle. It was just switch on/off by applications. If I let the Jolla GPS toggle on, will the GPS stay really on and so drain the battery? Or is this just a way to say "I want, or not, enable positioning"?

Just saw the ossi1967 comment, which is quite the same ;-)

@romu70, @ossi1967: Sorry, I meant the latter, no battery drain, on when an app requires location. Clearer?

It's just a switch for enable/disable GPS. GPS is only "on" when it is actually used. You can see it when the satellite symbol appears next to the clock...

Yes, perfect. Thanks a lot.
