[together] Deselecting answers revised

asked 2014-12-07 01:50:09 +0300

As I have been massively downvoted, I cannot reopen one of my questions that I closed myself.

In one of my questions, somebody selected the only answer with which I did not agree.

As I could not get to deselect it, I converted my comment into an answer, and selected it. -2

Then somebody comes and gets to deselect my answer, -15

How is this supposed to work?

people with sufficient karma can accept answers and close any question. They arent supposed to abuse this privilege, but sometimes they do.

I guess with selecting your own answer stops karma farming to not allow it

I did not want to select an answer of mine. I wanted to deselect the semi-offensive answer someone else chose.

@pulsar How would you suggest that question in hand should be closed, as it probably can't be answered? Would you accept if I write there an answer like "These questions should be handled separately"?

simo ( 2014-12-07 02:36:10 +0300 )edit

Do you realise that there are other aggregation questions?

And the question CAN be answered properly.

pulsar ( 2014-12-07 02:38:50 +0300 )edit

@pulsar hmm... where should I refer you to? Jolla wishes us to use separate questions for each issue here at TJC, not as a list. I'll search where that's written for you... (help isn't perfect) Meanwhile, please think about a solution which would follow that principle.

The Guideline project:

As this question is also tagged with guideline, posting here as well while the guideline project is going on. What do you people think, is this issue worth mentioning, for example in the new "Voting" guide? Would it prevent things like this to happen in the future, or have we all already learned this, no further guidance needed?

The guideline project discusses on these old guideline posts until September 20th, updating and gathering information from here to a new post The Guideline. You're welcome to join the project, for example by editing and commenting this answer.

I know that FAQ, thanks.

The issue is that the system seems broken.

I don't mean to be rude. But looking through the suggestions you have made, I see you asking for a lot of things that contradict the way the Sailfish UI works - swiping sideways for apps list, "x" to close app, etc.

This is just not how the system is set up and a lot of your suggestions aim at changing the whole concept instead of improving the existing one - which a lot of people like.

So that might be where the downvotes come from and it is probably the reason why someone selecte an answer yo didn't like (look how many upvotes that answer got).

So maybe take a step back, contribute and vote in other topics, rebuild your karma and all will be good. That is how karma works after all. Peace and good night.

I said that this would be an alternative mode. If they are downvoting because they think something would be taken away, they are not reading properly.

There are some things that just don't work as an option. How do you expect the programmers to fit all those contradicting suggestions in and still end up with a working system.

Since some of your suggestions conflict with the existing gestures and structure, that would be like writing several separate UIs, one for each set of options.

Pistol ( 2014-12-07 03:52:37 +0300 )edit

It is workable

It's maybe less about the exact details (like how many points are added or subtracted for what action exactly). The bottom line is that it does reflect how useful a persons contribution to the community are. The overall result won't change if details of the karma system do.

I see. I have now karma 1. So I am useless.

@pulsar I dislike how you got bombed down, even that there was a moment you could have taken a look into a mirror. At this point I'd like to suggest that you break up that original question which caused this into parts, close it with any reason and ask if @Eric or some other admin could return your karma back to at least 75 for you to be able to contribute with enough of privilidges again. Your earlier efforts at TJC backs you up on this, at least in my opinion. I'm sorry for your experience, and I hope we all learn from this. Sails up Sailors!

I already went through the effort of making separate questions an linking them to the original question, which is useful in its own right.

pulsar ( 2014-12-07 13:25:18 +0300 )edit

I see one comment "please don't ruin Sailfish for all of us", so it is clear some people are not reading properly, and that they don't realise Jolla would NEVER ruin the one-handed experience.

pulsar ( 2014-12-07 14:11:42 +0300 )edit

@pulsar Like simo, I don't agree with the tone of some of the comments made to your posts. You are entitled to your opinions and I think it's a valuable contribution to the community to discuss the alternative approaches you propose, even if many users here do not agree with them.
