The only thing that was crucial and a worry to me when buying this phone was having a decent enough map/sat-nav/GPS app, after having an iPhone for years and having the brilliant, easy and virtually bug free iphone maps

This is a list of all the apps you guys have recommended to me and print screens of what they do on my phone

  • Jolla maps - as everyone already knows, all that does is give a list of instructions, no real-time/turn-by-turn actions

  • Here maps (beta version) - You search for location, press go, and it just stays on 'waiting for gps' - http://i59.tinypic.com/2w7kc47.jpg

  • MapFactor. I downloaded all the UK maps as recommended, for offline use. For starters, the 'search through google' function doesn't work. What a suprise. So you have to find where you want to go another way (very hard). And it just stays on this page whilst youre driving http://i61.tinypic.com/24ay7g2.jpg

  • NavFree - Another super hard app to use with most functions broke (searching by google again for example), you finally find where you want to go (roughly) and it just says this - http://i59.tinypic.com/261kxo4.jpg

  • OsmAnd - find where you want to go, just says position not yet known - http://i60.tinypic.com/2njx844.jpg

  • MAPS.ME Pro - Once youve found where you want to go, just says this - http://i61.tinypic.com/28inq5z.jpg

Please can someone help me? Surely all these apps aren't this bad? Otherwise I have no other option to return to iPhone and return this phone before my 14 days refund period is up. Which would be a shame, cus apart from this, I do like the phone, and love having something 'different'

It's as if my phone's ability to locate where I am just isn't working. And yes I have it turned on in settings

Does Jolla maps give you the location of where you're? Also, Try starting native app first and then use Android apps. https://together.jolla.com/question/4853/gps-support-for-android-apps/?answer=4924#post-id-4924

I have used Waze for navigation couple of times and it worked fine for me.

You call the "iPhone Maps" bug free!? Sounds like a joke. Whatever. The Jolla sometimes seems to have GPS tracking issues (HW related?)... Try to restart the phone. When using in Flight Mode (e.g. HERE Beta) don't forget to reactivate "Location" in the settings.

In general you have to switch on GPS if you are not connected to mobile data or wifi it may take up to a few minutes to find position. If mobile data or wifi is connected it should be faster. As said below I would recommend turning on GPS open native maps app and wait until position is known, Then start here maps. I use Here Maps without problems, but I'm already on opt-in 1.1.0.x.

@drummer12, I always have wifi or mobile data connected so it should be even faster! but it doesnt work at all, can you please explain what you mean by 'i would recommend turning on GPS open mative maps app and wait until position is known, then start here maps'

I mean go to settings turn GPS on. Then open Jolla maps app. There is a small window in upper right corner, there should be your Position. If not maybe something is wrong with your GPS you may check this with CSD Tool. Access you get through typing ##310## in the phone app. Accept the terms and open GPS, there should be values on all entries (especially accuracy)

I have Sygic and HERE installed on my phone, from these two Sygic is more full featured (why oh why HERE doesn't offer speed cameras anymore!!) but it struggles quite a bit with GPS. It may work for some time but suddenly just loses the fix and takes forever to get it back, even if native maps has stable location at the same time. This is why I have moved to HERE maps, additionally it has better search functions.

As for not getting GPS-fix, of course your GPS has to be enabled and when installed, Android-app needs to be granted access to several functions (I'm not sure if they even can be denied during install). On my Jolla, GPS is always enabled and allowed to use A-GPS (I guess it needs to have mobile data enabled also). This way I get fix reasonably fast and stable on both native maps and HERE. I presume you have latest stable version of Sailfish OS installed (1.0.8.21 at the time of writing this)? When you fire up maps-app, do you see GPS-icon blinking next to battery indicator when "peeking"? If not, then GPS is either toggled off (can be found from settings-menu) or there is something wrong with your device (software or hardware). In such case you could try to run CSD, as instructed hereto see if diagnostics provides some additional info. Then you should have enough information to sort it out with jolla.zendesk.com.

Do you confirm that the GPS is turned ON under Jolla Settings -> System -> Location?

Do you confirm you see this icon after you start a GPS application (Maps/Here Beta/etc...) and you leave it running in background?

Could you also open native Maps application and show what's happening there as well?

Can anybody tell me if the GPS icons is supposed to be steady at some point or is it always blinking to you all?

J4ZZ ( 2014-12-17 18:11:45 +0300 )edit

When the phone has a GPS lock the icon is steady. I noticed the phone can have the position using the WiFi/Data, but in that case the icon is blinking until the GPS lock is done.

'GPS fix' means that the GPS is on, "connects" and finds your position. Whenever you open a map application until it gets a 'GPS fix' it will display some sort of message like position unknown, waiting for position etc. The idea is to open the native Jolla application in order to get a 'GPS fix'. Since the Jolla application is native to the phone it should be the one that works quicker to get a GPS fix. Once the GPS module locates you then opening another application that requires location data should work since the GPS module of the phone knows already where you are and this information should be immediately available to any application that requires it. Hope this is a bit clearer now.
