Edit:

Please add the support to show the 2.5G and 3.5G status indicators in the status bar to be able to determine to which cellular data service my device is connected to.

How can I see what cellular data service the phone is currently using (e.g. GPRS / EDGE / UMTS / HSDPA / HSPA+ / LTE / ...)? IMHO this information could be shown directly on the lockscreen.

I also think showing this info is good idea.

Network generation is shown, but how to get details?

For Android there are a lot of apps that can show extra information about network, like signal strength (in dBm) and cell id (CID), and access all network modes like 3G Only. Would it be possible to make this kind of app for Jolla or can the information be accessed at all?

Jolla is supposed to appeal to the technically minded who are currently being starved of useful data like this, Crucial if you are trying to see which SIM works best in the area you are in.

At least in Sailfish v1.0.7.16 (Saapunki), you can see the current cellular state via statefs, e.g. from Terminal:

$ contextkit-monitor /run/state/namespaces/Cellular

This data includes the technology in use, cell tower ID, MCC, MNC and LAC. It prints new lines for all changed values, you can stop it with Ctrl-C.

Alternatively, you can just cat files inside /run/state/namespaces/Cellular/ directory.

we just found out that it shows gprs even with edge speeds (>120kb)

Is there some way to determine which LTE band is currently used? The "DataTechnology" or "Technology" file shows "lte" only. :(

This d-bus ofono query was posted by somebody to a duplicate question, so let's post it also here:

/bin/dbus-send --system --print-reply=literal --type=method_call --dest=org.ofono /ril_0 org.ofono.NetworkRegistration.GetProperties

Currently it's not possible to show used technology other than ( gsm, umts, (lte)) without patching ofono.

Theoretically according to the ofono source documentation the NetworkRegistration Technology could contain gsm, edge, umts, hspa or lte. I've now only gsm level access, so I'll have to check later today what can be seen there...

The feature to show 2.5 and 3.5G indicator is shown in this video ( http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=zxv7iXwIgno&desktop_uri=%2Fwatch%3Fv%3Dzxv7iXwIgno ) so why is it not implemented anymore?:o

Alex ( 2014-02-05 14:28:27 +0200 )edit

Lot's of other things have changed also on the ui, but yes.. it shows 3.5G in there but it was only in the UI.

tigeli ( 2014-02-05 14:42:37 +0200 )edit

Any news regarding this issue? :)

If a shell/dbus solution is enough and you're possibly familiar with ofono dbus API, then you can get the a bit more detailed network technology from ofono via org.ofono.ConnectionManager interface (gsm/umts/edge/hspa/lte).

If 2G/3G/.. is enough for you, you will find this information by swipe between home- and the lock-screen.

I know, this is about details. The detailed information allows one to optimize sailing position on rural areas.. :)
