I am not able to add a contact for an organization. I must add a least a first name or a last name before I can store the contact. I don't know if this is a bug report or a feature request, but it is definitely a needed functionality to add an organization to the phone book.

I agree.

We also need to be able to search contacts so that the search will include the "company" field as well. This is highly important in the business world, but at the moment users can only find contacts by remembering their first or last name.

When will this be fixed?

In the current version (1.0.2.5), a contact must have at least one of (firstname, lastname, nickname). If you want to create a record for a contact without a personal name, you can use the nickname field for this - for example, you may have the number for your local library branch, stored as 'Library'.

The organization can also be stored, in the 'Company' field of the 'Details' section. This property is metadata, so you will need to have one of the ndentification fields non-empty as well. This property breakdown is in line with vCard properties - a vCard record must have a valid name or nickname field to identify a contact, and can optionally contain metadata fields including the organization that a contact represents, where appropriate.

Compatibility issues could and should be solved by the export algorithm not by the user. I think the usability is poor if an user must add a Hotel name to the nickname field an leave the company field empty.

@barmeier: regarding usability - if you think that that you should be able to enter a 'company' field without a 'nickname', you're misinterpreting the meaning of the field. The 'company' field is metadata about a contact, and that contact needs to be identified. If the contact represents the entirety of a company, then the name should still be in the 'nickname' field, and you have no need to add 'company' metadata to that contact.

If we allowed you to do it the other way around, it would produce an invalid vCard record if we were to export it. I don't agree that it would be a sensible approach to change the contents of the fields around during export, if that's what you suggesting?

I don't have a preference on how to add an organization to he phone book. My concern is that the process that we discuss here is not intuitive enough for the users. The user should not care about format specifications or metadata. How the data is stored or transferred must be in the scope of developers.

perhaps you could add the organizations name as a first or second name, it works for me pretty well.

I disagree... one should be able to enter organisations independently. Using first/last name for organisations is hacky.

This is the workaround
