Hi,

when selecting an email address inside a mail, this address can be selected and in the next menu it can be linked or saved. My issue is that is can be saved in a new contact only, not in an existing one without linking.

It would be much more accurate to be able to save the address or any type of information in an existing contact.

I don't understand what you mean by: "My issue is that is can be saved in a new contact only, not in an existing one without linking."

The two possible actions are 'Save', which creates a new contact with that email address, and 'Link', which selects an existing contact and adds the address to the contact you select. Is there a third option that you'd like to take?

Linking is not really a clean update of a contact. If I link an email address to an existing contact, they are not really considered as one contact on other servers, so sooner or later they will be troubles. I'm looking to have a third option "Save to" that will copy the email in an existing contact.

@damourti: 'Link' in this context means 'copy to', which is not the same operation as 'Link' between multiple contacts (where they retain their separate existences, but are shown as logically merged). Having said that, there is a technical complication where the contact you select is not modifiable, such as a Facebook contact, not merged to any other contact. In that case the 'copy to' operation will in fact change, so that we create a new contact record and logically merge it with the selected contact. This only occurs where it is necessary - we cannot 'copy to' a contact we cannot modify, or it would be lost when the original was updated for any reason.

None of this should prevent us from correctly doing two-way sync, when that is available, so there is no need for (or any possibility of) a third option.

I think that we have understanding issues. For info, I never use any contacts others than the once I have in Hotmail to avoid complications you just explained. I have made some screenshots to explain my case: 1) In this email, I would like to save the address underlined in blue (not all of them are, but that is another topic) Image and video hosting by TinyPic 2) Once selected, the people app opens and I can either link or save this email Image and video hosting by TinyPic

In this case, the link doesn't work, all I can do is save into a new contact. I can't add this address to an existing people contact.

@damourti: ok, so you try to use the 'Link' option, but it fails? Is there an error, or the change is just not applied? And the contact you try to link to, is synced from Hotmail, and not locally modified, is that right?

yes, exactly, nothing happens with link, no error message, and the existing contact I try to add this address is from Hotmail. (btw, contacts locally added do not sync with the Hotmail server for some reason, email and calender work fine)

@damourti: ok, thanks - I will try to reproduce this issue.

Regarding sync - we don't currently sync contact data up to any external service.
