It is possible to join multiple contact entries to just one. But if you try to destroy more than one of such a link at once, only the first selected one will be unlinked. As result you have to wait after each unlink until the cancel time (the time until the action will be really done) has expired.

an application like "merge duplicate contacts" from the N900 would be really good for this, is it possible to port it?

This is a bug with no workaround, unfortunately. It has been filed internally, but not yet fixed.

thanks for confirmation. I just experienced that bug few times when tried to unlink automatically linked contacts (that I mentioned elsewhere here) and that annoyed me enough.
