firstly India is emerging market of all smartphone.Hardware you use for your phone is too poor as compared to its price. consumers in India ,ordinary people think about technology and cheapness. there is pleanty of phones below 20k Rupees with 4k support,octacoreproceesors(64 bits ...) check out this phones indian market which are less than 10,000 rupees http://micromaxcanvas.co.in/mmx-yu-yureka-xiaomi-redmi-note/#more-3324 they have high and massive features in hardware(like 13 mp camera ,gorilla glass 3 ,5.5 hd display...) They have Android, though.

@g7 - but what about the people who want to use Sailfish OS on a nicely build and hardware up to date device? I want SailfishOS and in the same time I want device with good craftsmanship. Jolla is just cheap.

@zlatko "good craftsmanship" is different from the "hardware race" the OP exposed in its post. FWIW I haven't had any problems with Jolla's hardware (just some sporadic shutdowns in somewhat "extreme" conditions) and I also find it prettly nicely put togheter, but that's only me.

While I agree that the Jolla phone could've had slightly better internals (hey RAM I'm looking at you!), I find remarkable that a small startup managed to ship a phone in time and at a reasonable price. And they also had to develop the OS, which is an additional cost that other companies creating smartphones with Android don't have.

@g7 Exactly - that is what I am talking about! I want well designed, well crafted and with good materials and components device. The processing power is sufficient for the OS to work great, although a slightly better SoC and RAM will do no harm here. So far in that respect Jolla is the worst device I ever owned(...7110, 6600, E61, N9, N900):

  • cheap material TOH

  • bad design: sharp edges digging into your palm, many places dust is collecting in the front, when held in landscape your hand is covering the speaker etc.

  • cheap components: screen that is unreadable in sunshine, yellow zones start appear left side of the screen, screen does have oleophobic treatment, battery and contact get oxydized which causes reboots, actuator gets stuck, speaker disconnects, cheap LED light, camera glass cover antireflex finish wears out in weeks, etc., etc.....

All above are widely spread and documented issues - just look around TJC. That said - SailfishOS is developing nicely. I am comparing with Android as I am currently using SONY Z3 Compact as my main phone - Jolla in an year will be great if they keep going with the same pace! And this HW is ruining the experience!!! I agree that what Jolla is doing requires admiration, but that does rule out the fact that I can have my demands, for which I am willing to pay. I am ready to pay 700-800 euro, but get a device I really like. And I am not speaking about SoC here. I completely understand that we all are overpaying to support OS development.

The TOH "cheap material" is polycarbonate, arguably the best and most durable material you can build a phone with.

yes but Jolla need money in order to further develop sailfishos, where as cheap hardware manufacturers have no such costs and are able to maintain razor thin profit margins on their devices.

Jolla's strategy isn't to be a device manufacturer for exactly these reasons, they are a software company, sailfishos is the product.

ya jolla will be outsmart in future. but they need to port for other android phones before releasing this low hardware phone.

Rejuljazz ( 2014-12-26 08:15:21 +0300 )edit

@r0kk3rz What gives you that feeling of Jolla being a software company, not a hardware? We have a smartphone present and by May'15 a tablet is going to be made. And considering the software side… I would not agree with you. Sailfish OS native apps are just few. Most of them are just amateur level. Even those made by Jolla are still (one year on the market!) lack lots of the necessary and basic features. Many of the features still can be implemented on a hacker level only, not just for an average user. It's quite clear that most of the serious developers are not going to make a Sailfish OS versions of their apps till we don't have a possibility of paid apps on Jolla market. And, to be honest, till Sailfish OS will gain a notable market share. (Just look at Windows Phone — even that platform still lacks of many usefull apps). Some would point at the possibility to install Android apps on Sailfish OS. Yes, it helps with some apps, but not with many. Some (I would say around 1/3 of what I've tried) are Ok. Another 1/3 works, but buggy. All the others are just unable to run on my Jolla. Either they are based on Google Play Services unavailable on Sailfish OS, or there are any other incompatibilities: for me, as an end user, it makes no difference. I just can't use my Jolla the way I would like to. And any way, installing Android apps on Jolla is just a work around till we get all we need with Sailfish native apps. (Just imagine early Android devices running iOS apps…) So, what do we have by now: not a perfect hardware equipped with a still long way to develop software and a huge mountain of work to be done by Jolla's marketing division. Still, I do keep my enthusiasm with Jolla's future. I pre-odered Jolla tablet (hardware specs are quite optimistic), and do (try to) believe all or most of the problems I've mentioned, would be solved with the release of Sailfish OS 2.0.

@rburkhanov not so much of a feeling, as remembering direct quotes that have been said a number of times by Jolla leaders.

“We are a player in the operating system markets, not a manufacturer. Our goal is not to be a big tablet manufacturer. We do not have muscles required to enter the world markets in a large volume with our own unit, but we are willing to license this operating system to anyone” -- Jolla Chairman, Antii Saarnio

@r0kk3rz Thanks, have not seen that. But still it just makes even more important all the things I've been talking about. If Jolla is a software company, they should develop their software more actively. Just check this — some of the feature requests are more then a year old by now and up-voted hundreds of times. Seems like to be way too slow for a software company.

fully agree with the speaker, in relation to n9 (64GB, 8Mpix, NFC etc)... Jolla still prototype

pls look at this: http://recode.net/2014/09/23/teardown-shows-apples-iphone-6-cost-at-least-200-to-build/

I am aware that Aplle turned up costs, the amount of ordered equipment plus, but even to tegeo 50% are still around $ 300 (with licenses etc etc)

I would also like to see more upmarket quality hardware for the phone. I think users would be willing to pay a little more to get this. I don't know if this is possible though because a small company will always take a lot longer to develop the software/firmware etc compared to a company using standard Android with its massive development effort. As a result the hardware will never be able to compete with the leading edge either feature- or value for money-wise. Jolla devices will always be slightly out of date and products will not be able to be replaced by new versions as quick as the opposition. It must be accepted that Jolla devices have to last longer and be updated and supported for much longer than comparable products. This also implies that the basic hardware quality should be better than average to survive an expected longer lifetime. The only way to tackle this is gradually over time build up the eco-system, product quality and user base to fund more ambitious devices. I don't know how far this process can go because I suspect Jolla will always be a minority device.
