Native app for spotify [duplicate]

Hi folks,

A lot of us want a native app for Spotify and I just came across this thread that was campaigning for a native one

https://together.jolla.com/question/4239/native-spotify-app/

There is an answer in the thread that asks us to vote on Spotify forum to convice them to create a native app. Unfortunately, if you click on the link to vote, you will see that about 3 weeks ago, Spotify have updated the status of the request to "Not right now" which I assume is not anytime in the near future.

Fortunately, we do have a native app option - CuteSpotify, but it requires a premium account. As far as I know, the official Spotify apps on ALL platforms (Android, Windows Phone, Apple) do not require a premium app to use (there are features within the app that require a premium account, but all basic use can be used with a free account).

The reason I am raising this question is why does CuteSpotify need a premium account? I am sure its of no fault of the developer, but does anyone have any opinion on what could be changed in CuteSpotify so that it can used with Spotify without a Premium account and work just like the official Spotify apps without a Premium account?

There is no API to access the music without a premium account. So it is simply not possible for any third-party to access music without a premium account. https://developer.spotify.com/

why does CuteSpotify need a premium account?

If you look at the ubuntu/debian native client of spotify it is also for premium users only. The only way to run spotify free version is to use the wine based version.

As we haven’t found a reliable way to display ads yet, this version is only available to Spotify Premium subscribers.

Looks like the same story is going on in Jolla where we run android application instead of native salfish os versions to listen to free music ( personally haven't tried) .

Thanks. Forgive my ignorance, but what is the wine based version? Will it not be possible to implement that in CuteSpotify?

Wine is a program to emulate Windows APIs. In other words it allows you to run Windows applications on top of it without Microsoft Windows. More at https://www.winehq.org/

284 Kudo's, whoop whoop. We need to have a minimum of 500 to make B0bbens boss watch his video or something like that!
