Hi Android today have native support for Iphone compatible smilies (emoji) would be great if jolla could support this eventually aswell

Update: Can this Emoji be installed by default in Jolla? Need not be set as active keyboard layout but at least to be able to read these fonts in messages. (Eg: Twitter messages in Tweetian)?

I think actually the thing is that the devices just replace smilies (such as :-) ) with the 'emoji'. This at least is what the Symbian and MeeGo devices did.

But how about the other way around send, emoji to an iphone user, that is today possible on android. So its not just one way communication I'm thinking about, where jolla can understand smilies coming from an iphone but also be able to send an iphone compatible smilie back an iphone.

I have created a similar question a few days ago. maybe these should be merged?

hm yea maybe update subject if so on your question? also asking for sending out emoji compatible encoding so iphone etc can understand it, it imo more important than beeing able to see them myself. (gf really likes them :P )

I also already added a question for the input part! :-)

These features are complementary, and one can work without the other... Showing emoji can be as easy as adding a font to the system, while adding the possibility to add emoji to your message require at least a new input method, or some rework of the message application.

I think we should have both, but there are low hanging fruits we can have sooner.

The thing is, barring jolla shop policy, these are enchancement te community can do on its own...

Sailfish should include the Emoji Keyboard out of the box. What's the point with having perfectly working community submissions and not implementing those in the official "environemt"?

Install the emoji keyboard from openrepos to get both emoji keyboard and view the symbols in texts.

Hint: use warehouse client to install it.

I installed the emoji keyboard from warehouse client and I can select the keyboard in the settings, but then I can't change to the normal keyboard layout and just send emoticons and no text. When i switch to the normal keyboard in the settings, i can switch to emoji keyboard but then i can't switch back. do you have any solution for this? thank you in advance...

@piwostar - I'm a little confused by your question, but I think this will help:

  • Use "Settings" to enable the keyboards you want to use. (English, Emoji...)
  • Press and hold the spacebar to select the "Emoji" keyboard.
  • When using Emoji, press and hold the bottom-left "globe" button to change keyboards.

okay, that works. thank you very much. i searched the spacebar at the emoji keyboard an i was a little bit confused that there is no spacebar, but the globe make now sense.

Nice app but calling home. Not possible to deactivate that permanently :-(

@JonnJonz - The emoji keyboard uses the Internet? How can you tell?

I just noticed Google released the noto-emoji font under an open license. It should be nice to have it packaged for sailfish os:

I tried to use Noto-Emoji, but it doesn't displayed the emojis. So I also added to colored version of noto, but fc-scan wasn't able read it (while on my Archlinux it was able). So it installed OpenSaneEmoji from Github and it worked.

The most recent Sailfish OS Version 2.2.0.29 "Mouhijoki" brings a native "beta emoji keyboard": https://together.jolla.com/question/184471/release-notes-220-mouhijoki-released/

So, can this question be closed?

IMHO yes, as the basic functionality exist in SailfishOS 2.2.0 (even though there is still a lot of room for improvement, hence currently also having the Emoji keyboard from OpenRepos installed is still recommended).

olf ( 2018-07-14 23:15:27 +0300 )edit

I wouldn't say this is "released" as some iPhone emojis do not show and the installation of the keyboard from Warehouse, also doesn't seem like a proper solution and doesn't fully cover everything either.

Please don't add this, it warms my heart everytime I see the blank box in my recieved messages. Basic smileys should be enough for anyone and everyone.

Disagree. It should be included, with the option of turning it off if you don't want to use it. That's the best way to do it if Sailfish matures and more people are going to use it.

Why does the incapacity to see received messages warm your heart? Most users want to be able to see the messages they receive.

WhyNotHugo ( 2015-02-16 07:54:18 +0300 )edit

@hobarrera, I can see the messages, just not the "funny" (read stupid) emojins. Why can't we have some kind of control characters for italic, bold and underlined text in SMS in year 2015 when emojins have been around for years?

Actually, I'd love it if SMS apps followed the old scholl convention of emphasis or _underline_, etc that we've been using since... usenet?

Maybe partially solved with Aurajoki.

Common smiley characters supported

I think "smilies" mean "emoji" here. Yes, we can't type Emojis, but seeing the plague and therefore being able to interpred them is all required as user! The problem with Emojis is leaving the common denominator (ASCII) and adding stuff to UTF-8, recognizing it doesn't cover everything, adding more stuff to UTF-8, recognizing that not everything is covered anyone can imagine and adding more stuff...
