So it's this time of the year again. FOSDEM will be in Brussels on the weekend 30th of January till 1st of February. Many members of the Sailfish community and also quite a few sailors (Jolla employees) will be present.

This "question" is about planning at least 3 events for this weekend, each will have its own "answer" to upvote by people planning to participate and comment by everyone:

Saturday

  • 16:00-16:30 Jolla tablet discussion round
  • 16:30-18:00 Community round table
  • 19:30- Community dinner

dirkvl ( 2015-01-19 16:32:48 +0200 )edit

@dirkvl most probably not possible for some, I work on Friday and after that I have over 5 hour drive to Brussels, so I will be there on Friday about midnight...

This is FOSDEM: friday night we'll all be getting rather hammered at Delerium :D

Sailfish community round-table

BoF-room reserved and announced. 16:30-18:00 (local time)
https://plus.google.com/u/0/events/cn53nnt8hch5c7mf7bb8pqrg7es

The purpose of the round-table will be to discuss on various technical and political topics face to face, while during dinner it will naturally break down into smaller (table sized) groups. Please propose topics in the comments to this answer and I'll build an agenda from it here. Please help prioritize by up-voting the comments on this answer.

I am pretty sure there would be an "open source" discussion ;)

Security stuff Kind of a followup from the discussions from last year. From the release plans it seems Jolla may be considering the use of SELinux. If there are any concrete plans we could possibly discuss/bikeshed them a bit before they're set in stone.

Seeing the lack of topics, not sure if we need different rooms for tablet and "general community". Possibly 1 room for 2h would be enough (last year's 1h felt too small for me, but feel free to disagree).

javispedro ( 2015-01-26 16:51:23 +0200 )edit

Where are the rooms and timings ?

Sailfish community dinner on Saturday

There is now a separate sign up for the dinner: https://together.jolla.com/question/77616/whos-actually-coming-to-the-mersailfish-meal-at-fosdem/

- time: TBD (if down town then 19:30, to give a 1-2h window for people to get back to their hotel, change, etc) - location: TBD

Saturday is the day for community dinners at FOSDEM. This might be inconvenient for people, who would like to attend a different dinner too, but such is life, you make choices. Friday it's beer event and Sunday, mostly everybody is leaving already.

This will provide a natural follow-up to the other meetings like e.g. community round-table and will allow for follow-up discussion in smaller groups.

nice, count me in!

Bonus points will be granted if you can find a place this time that doesn't just take orders but actually delivers the food eventually ;)

Guess why it nowhere mentions A la morte subite. It's a nice restaurant, but their quality of service has declined over the years and last year was really bad. They apparently took the reservation from us but didn't assign a second person to the private floor despite it having two large groups. Mozilla had probably 50-60 people there.

Allowing hackability while keeping the tablet secure

I think it would be good to discuss the hackability/security balance of the Jolla tablet as introduced in the Balancing hackability and privacy/security blog post.

Extending the Jolla tablet with additional hardware (AKA Jolla Tablet TOH interface)

The [Request] [Jolla Tablet] TOH/docking is one of the top voted tablet hardware related questions on Together, but unlike the others (3G, USB3.1C, bigger battery, etc) does not require big tablet design changes to satisfy the requirements, just about any low speed easily accessible interface. So it might be good to discuss how the "tablet TOH" interface could be done, if possible with authors of some of the currently available Jolla smartphone TOHs attending the discussion.

And even if it is too late to change the design, it might be still be good to discuss how the interfaces already present in the design could be used to extent the tablet, USB host mode, using usb/bluetooth peripherals with the tablet, physical mounting options for custom hardware, etc. :)

Just a few days to go, but I do not see any Jolla sessions, agendas, room reservations etc. I downloaded SailMe + FOSDEM yesterday but nothing Jolla specific really jumps out; I wouldn't want to turn up on the wrong day :-(! Cheers

@pjb770: there is at least a talk by @lbt about Mer, Sailfish, etc on Saturday: https://fosdem.org/2015/schedule/event/sailfishos/
