I've been thinking long and hard about this. I also find always waking up to the lock screen quite intrusive. I really love the way this is implemented on the N900. It has two switches. One on the top, this is a normal push button and serves as a power switch. Pressing that brings up the lock screen, where the user has to slide an icon across the screen to unlock the phone. The purpose is to prevent an accidental activation of something when that button gets pressed in the pocket or bag.
The other way to wake up the phone is a slider on the side. This is near impossible to do by accident and therefore the phone wakes up to the last screen it was before it was locked, be it the desktop, the launcher or the current top application.
It would be cool if Jolla did something similar:
Posting this as an "answer" rather than a "comment" to allow people up- and down-vote it. I woul really like to know what you people think.
How about double tap to lock screen, and triple tap to previous screen (home, app...)?

You can configure also double tap to go directly to home screen instead of lock screen via:
mcetool --set-doubletap-mode=unlock
Note: Does not bypass device unlock screen.
Caveat: Might still make pocket calls / similar issues more likely if proximity sensor etc are not working as expected.
Also, if the not yet officially available Sneak Peek (a.k.a "fake lpm" / "glance screen") is enabled:
mcetool --set-low-power-mode=enabled
You see time etc when taking the device from pocket and double tapping from there takes you directly to apps view.
However none of this changes what is shown in the lock screen, so getting to see battery / cellular info still requires peeking.
(mcetool can be installed via: pkcon install mce-tools)

+1 for wake up to the last app
Edit 1: For wake up with the power button too, not just double tap.
Edit 2: I would even go as far as suggesting to make it the default and using the lock screen only for something useful, like entering the lock code if one is set.
pichlo ( 2015-01-12 18:27:17 +0200 )editWith double tap you have the lock screen, with double pressure on the power button you have the main screen on 1.1.1.27 Check also here for something related to last app used.
damourti ( 2015-01-13 00:51:20 +0200 )editYes, but an system option to define what to do when the user made a "double tap" on the screen would be very nice. Think by example, when you are walking through Internet and you need to made some other stuff, when you return to your phone, you want to be positioned automatically on the right place.
manu007 ( 2015-01-13 09:43:05 +0200 )editFor sure the title and maybe the description of this question need some improvement. The current title "wake up with double tap" is already something available. :)
It might even draw more attention to the proposal.
