Enhancement of push/swipe from left edge

When pushing apps to background I noticed that I always swipe from the right edge. Now for me the left edge is almost never used and seems redundant (holding the phone in the right hand).

From this admittedly subjective perspective, the left edge could be used for (many) additional menu items. The idea would be to push/swipe from the left edge to pull out an additional menu that could be used by apps.

I am right-handed. So at least the enhancement should be optional by interchanging left and right sides in settings.

Still there would be a couple of principles to be discussed, so think of this idea as a 'condensation nucleus'.

Edit: If one edge swipe brings up the extra menu, another edge swipe from the same side still could eventually push the app to background. Now with home event screen carousel in SF 2.0 this does not seem inconsistent either imo.

Definitely in favor adding multiple swipe options!

For instance, dividing the screen in swipe from upper edge and swipe from lower edge or L shaped swypes like BB has. Doesnt need to be enable by default, but even opening your most used app like this would make everything a lot faster!

I have a lot more in mind but do not want to overload topics. You are completely right. We also need methods to make standard inputs as quick and easy as possible, without exhaustive use of battery. And the display still is cause number one of battery drain.

Agreed. A problem for me is that I use the phone with both hands seperately and sometimes together. Don't have any idea if I'm the only one. I think the issue isn't big, just a little of getting used to it.

I remember discussing this elsewhere (in IRC, IIRC) and was told left edge swipe is reserved for partnership content. Eg: Angry Birds Rovio content. It is there in some demo video by Marc Dillion as well.

While you are suggesting enhancements by e.g. settings swiped in from home screen which has my support, I am referring to additional menu items for apps while maximised. The peek gesture which I was referring to as pushing apps to background is a distinct feature of SailfishOS which is appreciated and not put into question by my idea at all. I merely want to discuss the necessity of peeking from both sides, and this discussion is not found in other togethers.

If you really want to... not having both sides the same is out of the scope for me as I use both sides... actually only people with a fixation to one hand use one side only... and there is landscape where you usually use both hands and for muscle memory must not have different effects! I reopen it though -.-

If it is optional, no harm done. That's why I want to refer to it as an enhancement and not a change. Regarding muscle memory, think of a road bike. Two brake handles for both hands, still you would not want to use them the same way when coming down the Stilfser Joch.
