Volume adjustment works while phone is locked, independent of any application [answered]
Update 1.0.3.8: pressing volume key while the phone is locked brings the display on with the volume bar visible.
Pressing the volume key (up or down) while the screen is locked changes the volume. Double tapping within a few seconds to show the lock screen also shows the volume bar. This is not the ringing volume, but the application volume. This should only be allowed when an application specifically needs it (ie. music player).
Edit: atleast since 1.1.1.27 the volume keys do nothing when the phone is locked and screen is off. Nor does pressing the volume-rockers wake up the screen. Only when the screen is on and the phone is locked/unlocked do the volume keys adjust the volume.
I see this as a feature. It is very confusing when you cannot control the volume unless an app specifically requests it. Take Rockbox on the N900 as an example.
nodevel ( 2014-01-01 21:49:05 +0200 )editI would see this as feature, if you could silence the phone without taking it out of the pocket, like you can on N9 for example. It did however require you to press power button first, after which you could change volume profile with volume up/down buttons.
Milo ( 2014-01-01 21:57:01 +0200 )editThe volume keys get pressed accidentally quite easily... Thanks to this feature, your application volume is on a more or less random level every time you have had the phone in your pocket for a while.

clau ( 2014-02-01 00:45:54 +0200 )editThis seems like a bug to me - the volume keys should not be active while the device is locked (unless a media application is running, which could use the volume rocker for some purpose - eg. actually change the volume of the playing audio, or skip forward/backward, play/pause etc.).
Milhouse ( 2014-02-01 03:33:28 +0200 )editBut when no audio is active, and the screen is locked, all input from the volume rocker should be ignored.
@clau: Hope you don't mind - I re-tagged your question changing "rocker" to "volume-rocker" as the latter tag is already being used on several other related questions.
