Update 1.0.3.8: pressing volume key while the phone is locked brings the display on with the volume bar visible.

Pressing the volume key (up or down) while the screen is locked changes the volume. Double tapping within a few seconds to show the lock screen also shows the volume bar. This is not the ringing volume, but the application volume. This should only be allowed when an application specifically needs it (ie. music player).

Edit: atleast since 1.1.1.27 the volume keys do nothing when the phone is locked and screen is off. Nor does pressing the volume-rockers wake up the screen. Only when the screen is on and the phone is locked/unlocked do the volume keys adjust the volume.

I see this as a feature. It is very confusing when you cannot control the volume unless an app specifically requests it. Take Rockbox on the N900 as an example.

I would see this as feature, if you could silence the phone without taking it out of the pocket, like you can on N9 for example. It did however require you to press power button first, after which you could change volume profile with volume up/down buttons.

The volume keys get pressed accidentally quite easily... Thanks to this feature, your application volume is on a more or less random level every time you have had the phone in your pocket for a while.

I haven't closed the item, so feel free to vote it up. I still consider it a bug.

This seems like a bug to me - the volume keys should not be active while the device is locked (unless a media application is running, which could use the volume rocker for some purpose - eg. actually change the volume of the playing audio, or skip forward/backward, play/pause etc.).

But when no audio is active, and the screen is locked, all input from the volume rocker should be ignored.

@clau: Hope you don't mind - I re-tagged your question changing "rocker" to "volume-rocker" as the latter tag is already being used on several other related questions.

The volume key events have always gone through. What the 1.0.3.8 changed is: if the proximity sensor is not covered, the display is briefly lit to show the level change that is going to happen anyway.

The ui is not unlocked due to volume key press, thus application ui should be visible only after automatic blanking within grace period. And that grace period is terminated if proximity is covered after automatic blanking.

Note that changes to this are in the plans, the volume keys will not do anything when the display is off unless there is something expecting them (music playback/call/alarm).

Thanks for the update and confirmation that further changes are planned, it currently drives me mad that whenever I pick the phone up with my fat fingers, I end up accidentally changing the volume! :)

Atleast since 1.1.1.27 this has been implemented and the volume keys do nothing when screen is off. Thanks for this, case closed ;)

Make it an option, but let the current behavior (volume adjustable while phone is locked) be the default activated standard. So the OCD crowd can lock the volume rocker while the phone is locked. Meanwhile the users that expect volume rockers to just work like on any other phone are satisfied, too.

There is another problem with the volume atm, for which I will file an extra bug, but which is kinda related: it is completely impossible to adjust the volume of the audio jack via any external control! What we need is: 1. Volume buttons on headphones working 2. Sync volume with devices connected via bluetooth. Car Kits, external speakers, etc. 3. Pebble watch can switch audio, but not on the Jolla. Possible due to general lack of this feature.

I could live with an autolocking rocker, when any of the above devices are connected for example. Having to unlock the phone just to adjust the volume while I am using an external speaker is just a major PITA.
