Are you talking about the user interface or the engine (i.e. WebKit)? As far as I know, the current browser is Gecko-based; do you have any reason in particular for wanting it to be WebKit-based?

I'm taking about both, as far as I know, chromium engine is now blink. But the main reason for me is the ability to sync between my devices with chromium.Bookmarks, passwords, form data and tabs. and i thought webkit and qt would play better together. but I'm just a user and don't know what the advantage would be

"is it even possible to sync your chromium/chrome to other browsers?"

don't know but let's not use the edit function of the question to discuss this issue. Someone should figure out, and then post an answer.

siggi_digital: so your request should be different, you want the ability to sync between chrome/chromium, not the browser based on chromium.

As others have mentioned: having a separate app or browser plugin to sync between the Jolla browser and 'Chromium', or Opera Sync, Apple iCloud, or whatever you use, would make more sense.

I think the best solution would be to have the ability to set another browser as the default browser. But first there have to be more native ones

first, the default browser should be the paramount of usability and comfort, and not create the desire to use another one.

Yes, but let's face it: The stock browser 1. crashes occasionally, 2. recognises my clicks in wrong places, 3. sometimes cannot load the JS-based links I click 4. does not use (or get?) network-based location, 5. does not have a private session mode, 6. does not let me navigate using gestures, 7. does not let me select / copy text, 8. does not provide a way to call phone numbers (or save them to the address book) I find on the web. You can try to ride a dead horse, but it's still a dead horse!

I for one had to resort on using Android Firefox. And this almost one year after this thread was created :-(

EDIT: Apparently the stock browser can call numbers found on web pages, but not save them to the address book.

What would be the profits of that?

The current browser is based on firefox (mozembedlite) which is proven on desktops.

If you want a chrome-based browser, this should be an app in the store, because otherwise people like you come and say "I want a firefox based browser!".

this is not really an answer;)

Well, I'm telling that the way it is now is okay, so it's an answer in some way.

Edit: And the question wasn't really one to start with as well ;)

Kondou ( 2013-12-27 04:14:20 +0300 )edit

i would not expect an answer to start with a question, or is that a rethorical one?

Only really needed application for smartphone is browser. The more browsers the better. Im not going to say what should be the stock browser engine. But as heavy chrome user I prefer it over firefox.

You can build chromium android version from source: https://code.google.com/p/chromium/wiki/AndroidBuildInstructions

I have not done this so not sure if it will work.

And here is the firefox android version(you can download the apk and install): ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/mobile/releases/latest

I have been using firefox a bit and its good. Not chrome level but good.

Anybody seen this tiny browser , this is a chromium based browser. And even in this early stage it feels faster and better integrated in the os than the jolla browser.

It's based on QtWebkit. The QtWebkit works fine for now, and we even use it for accounts, and email WebViews. Bad thing in it is that it is not really maintained in future, since Qt is transitioning into using Chromium engine and all the platform integration needs to be redone.

veskuh ( 2013-12-28 12:17:56 +0300 )edit

it is not so long ago that the chromium-browser used webkit . I do not understand the detour via gecko, if you going to redo all the platform integration anyway with a future Qt update.

@siggi_digital Qt decided to switch engine not us. For browser we are going to keep Gecko. For email, accounts, and 3rd party apps we have not decided if start using Qt's new WebView or offer something based on Gecko.

veskuh ( 2013-12-28 12:51:27 +0300 )edit

@veskuh as far as I know Qt decided to switch from WebKit to Chromium/Blink http://blog.qt.digia.com/blog/2013/09/12/introducing-the-qt-webengine/ . Chromium is more native for Qt than Mozilla
