I've had my device for over 14 months and I've never ever had 3g signal.

I'd checked and double check with my carrier and my settings, etc, and I never had beter than 2g (most carriers don't support 4g here yet). Still, I wasn't 100% sure if it wasn't somehow the carrier's or SIMs fault.

Today I grabbed a friend's iPad 3g, stuffed my SIM in it, copied the APN settings, and it worked immediately, which pretty much means the issue is on my side/the jolla's side.

I live in Argentina. My providers during this time have been Movistar (a telefonica subsidiary), Tuenti (another telefonica subsidiary) and another which I can't recall right now - probably Claro (from the mexican Claro group).

Is it possible that there's an issue with unsupported frequencies? If so, can anything be done?

According to the specs, the Jolla phone supports UMTS bands 1 and 8 (900/2100 MHz) while the network operators in Argentina are using bands 2 and 5 (1900/850 MHz) (Wikipedia).

Yup. Thanks. I could have sworn that I check and double check on 2013 before ordering. Must have checked wrong. Damn.

Nothing that simple... Movistar or in general providers in Argentina use 850/1900 for WCDMA your Jolla provides 900/2100... see another one as reference http://nacho.com.ar/2015/02/bandas-3g-y-4g-en-argentina/

From the looks of it you will not have 4g either, with your Jolla you will be limited to 2g as long as the providers don't change anything.

Yes, you're right. Argentina seems to have a very odd pair of frequencies; latinamerica is basically the only place where a Jolla won't work with any network. I'm guessing it's a hardware limitation, so I'm stuck with 2G until I can get out of here. :(
