I've noticed my ambiences keep losing their settings, I can alter 10 in a row, then a few days later the phone will ring and everything's gone back to default sounds . . . . . . . I'm pressing the star to favourite them, specifying tones etc, then setting them, but they just don't seem to save properly or change back of their own accord and I have no idea if I'm doing something wrong, or is this some sort of bug I'm not aware of ?

Thanks...

Are the tunes on the sdcard? If so yes this is a known issue since the beginning!

Thanks chemist, I was not aware of this, only got the phone in August last year, do I take it from your reply there is no fix? Why on earth would this still be an issue for so long......

First thing I thought of was moving tones to the default folder but it opens the SD card folder : / so that's that idea down the pan . . . . . or is it?

No fix as of yet or you would not run into it. Images and tunes you want for ambiences you should just move to internal storage, note "move" not copy! If you want to have it clean you may move pure ringtone tunes to the actual ringtone folder in /usr/share/sounds/jolla-ringtones/stereo/ to have them listed with the pre-installed.
