Update: We'll start rolling out the update to everyone today. If possible, update with the device connected to a charger. If you have phonehook from OpenRepos installed uninstall it before upgrading.

Please ensure that you have ~1.5GB of free disk space before attempting to upgrade your Jolla. If connected to the internet, and your account is subscribed for early access releases, your Jolla should receive an OS update notification shortly.

As usual,

  • If you use phonehook from OpenRepos, uninstall it before upgrading
  • If you use patchmanager, revert all applied patches before upgrading
  • If your device is running software version lower than 1.0.4.20 and have WareHouse app installed (i.e you are using OpenRepos), disable all openrepo repositories before attempting to upgrade your device.
  • Do not reboot the device while the update is in progress.
  • The device screen may blank out during the update process, you may waken the display by a short press on the power key to monitor the progress.

For detailed instructions on updating software, visit Zendesk

Upgrade version history

  • 1.1.4.28 (15.4.2015): Initial early access release
  • 1.1.4.29 (28.4.2015): Fix 'peek to events possible on locked device' and 'duplicate caldav calendars'

Highlights

  • Split keyboard in landscape mode, with option to turn it off
  • IMAP implementation now has support for idle/push
  • Maps now supports landscape orientation
  • Facebook API has been updated to 2.2, which unfortunately causes loss of features (chat or contacts sync, see the end of the roadmap email). We are awaiting an approval of the new implementation from Facebook, until then you will unfortunately experience a broken Facebook account (including being unable to share status message and photos).
  • Better swipe feedback

Security fixes

CVE-2015-0245 CVE-2014-9402 CVE-2013-7423 CVE-2014-9402 CVE-2015-1472 CVE-2015-1473 CVE-2014-9092 CVE-2014-3571 CVE-2015-0206 CVE-2014-3569 CVE-2014-3572 CVE-2015-0204 CVE-2015-0205 CVE-2014-8275 CVE-2014-3570 CVE-2014-9636 CVE-2014-8139 CVE-2014-9636 CVE-2014-9622 CVE-2015-1349

Known issues

OS update process

  • If you have phonehook from OpenRepos installed uninstall it before upgrading.
  • Currently, checks on available disk space happens very late during the OS upgrade process and will fail in the installation phase if the disk space is low. Normally there should be an error note asking you to free some disk space and try again, but in some marginal cases it might not be shown. Should this happen, free some disk space and try to install the OS update again.
  • OS update may fail due to some other reasons too, for example it may have installed some packages from the new release and still have something left from the old. If the device can boot up, you can try to recover by doing the following. If not, you can attempt to recover the device using the recovery mode.
    • Delete the file /home/nemo/.cache/store-client/os-info
    • Stop the store-client process (for e.g. pkill store-client)
    • Reopen Settings app, check for updates again and attempt to install the OS update again
  • We have also noted that if the OS update is attempted while there is long queue of installation of apps from the Store, the system may end up in mixed state (for e.g. select all the apps from startup wizard, and start the system update already while the apps are being installed).
    • In such cases, the OS update appears to be stalled, however it is just waiting for the installations to complete before attempting to upgrade the OS. Just wait patiently, the worst thing to do here is to reboot the device!

Other issues

  • calDAV and cardDAV services are in experimental stage. We have made some improvements with this update, however you may still face issues with certain service providers. Do report it in t.j.c. We'll take a look and try to sort it out.
  • Deleting photo from Camera roll may also delete the previous photo. If camera reel's pulley menu has "Show details" greyed out - means the photo hasn't been indexed yet. Deleting photo in such state will result in previous photo deleted too. If you wait long enough (~10-15seconds) for 'Show details' to become active, only that photo will get deleted when you choose to.

Already got it ;)

I like it so far, smooth in general, feels tighter, quicker, more responsive over all. Not long now and we'll be talking about Sailfish OS 2.0 :)

Spam Hunter ( 2015-04-16 13:42:33 +0300 )edit

As according to the full changelog in the seperate post, the "some calDAV improvements" that are talked about are not more than "Use ignore_ssl_errors configuration option"?

@Markkyboy you're faster than greased lightning bolt :p

I just only now got the popup that the update is ready to be downloaded :)

Update failed at first, ended up "between" the versions, without icons for example. I don't hack my Jolla much, and this was the first update causing any kind of smallest trouble. However, updating on second try was successful.

The installation process was quite slow. The new version has a significant improvement in the responsiveness of the device.

After update I have noticed that battery drainage is twice as much as the previous version, this according to SysMon and also the fact that I used to be able to charge my phone at work on Friday and still have 40% left when I returned on Monday, but now I'm already on 48% and it's just Saturday afternoon.

No, I haven't installed more applications, nothing since I updated and yes I have android apps that runs in the background, but those have always done that.

yep, saturday, no phone activity and 14% were drained, max 5% for this time period was expected (im running low display brightness, disabled 4G,wlan,bt) - no alien, only jolla essentials, no email check off the peak..,caldav twice day

pan tau ( 2015-04-25 17:33:54 +0300 )edit

Not this extreme but I can confirm that phone eats more battery since update.

William ( 2015-04-26 13:42:33 +0300 )edit

Ended up with 38% after a single day. Battery used to last about two days with my light usage.

https://together.jolla.com/question/30822/root-and-home-disks-full-and-causing-various-problems/ (just for routing and probably an additional draining thingie) - btrfs balance on every tuesday 3:00

Hei, I can confirm. Every once in a while, generally by afternoon (I charge the battery in the evenings), I notice my Jolla to be hot to the touch (according to CSD, over 40 degs C). Battery leaking 350-450 mA. After reboot, it normalizes to 90-140 mA. Strange... LVPVS out.

After some days of use with 1.1.4.28 I can see that there can be a problem with switching from WLAN to Mobile-Data and vice versa automatically.

For the last few days whenever I step out of my house the phone doesn't automatically switch the connection to use Mobile data instead of the WiFi. The phone will stay disconnected for hours (since it is looking for a WiFi ignoring the fact that mobile data is available). I have to go in settings and turn off WiFi. Then it immediately connects and stays connected to Mobile data when I turn the WiFi back on.

In the same way, when I go back to an area with a known WiFi the phone will stay connected to the Mobile Data instead of switching to the known WiFi. Rebooting the phone or restarting network connections via Utilities fixes this behavior for a while and then it starts behaving in the same way again.

I think this is a step backwards since with 1.1.2.x there was a big improvement in connection handling: the phone was reliably switching between WiFi and Mobile data automatically, without having to wake it up (which used to be the case in the past for me and it was very annoying) or have to turn things on and off in the settings menu.

Has anybody else seen these issues with switching between WiFi and mobile data?

Yes, I have exact same experience. With 1.1.2 I hardly ever needed to restart networking. Now on 1.1.4.28 I have to do it daily, and sometimes several times during the day, if moving between different Wifis.

nick75 ( 2015-04-22 12:43:45 +0300 )edit

I can confirm that. Phone keeps asking several times for WLAN network, even though it should be connected to 1. mobile data and 2. already to WLAN router.

molan ( 2015-04-22 15:35:27 +0300 )edit

I experience that a similar issue, in that when the phone switches from mobile-data (4G) to WLAN it sometime prompts for passwords on networks that are known to it.

kid ( 2015-04-29 10:48:43 +0300 )edit

Does this still occur with the 1.1.4.29 release? @nick75, @cquence? I haven't yet upgraded, and wouldn't like to end up with this issue...

Installed without hitch.

Feedback:

(1) UI is a little smoother.

(2) Feels significantly quicker (back to pre update 9 speed). Though this is conditional on (4).

(3) Out of memory killer is more difficult to trigger, which is a relief.

(4) HOWEVER - there are still obviously major RAM usage / management problems, as every time I've opened a couple of tabs in a browser (and memory usage shoots up), the phone slows to a crawl. Granted, this is less frustrating than constantly having all apps (except phone app) close, but I think the Jolla's days are numbered. If I don't move to Android (likely Paranoid Android or CM), I'll be moving to Sailfish on an Android phone (with more RAM).

Ubuntu Phone is still another option - and it's already pretty great.

SuperPhone ( 2015-04-17 11:04:36 +0300 )edit

Could be an option once the Meizu MX4 Ubuntu Edition releases.

I actually like Jolla Sailfish most. i have Nexus 4 with dualboot Android 5.1 and Ubuntu, but JOLLA you browser must be bigger priority! only 3 real tabs, no text copy!! Make the text copy like the Web pirate or the Webcat.

Jolla needs to partner with Mozilla here, and work together to bring us a polished browser. Stuff like Firefox Sync in invaluable to me, and Firefox for Android ends up being my default browser.

When creating a new email account, the option is enable IDLE is not present. After account the edition screen doesn't show it either. I need to close the settings window and re-open it for this option to appear.

Comments

Indeed, the IDLE option is not present during account creation. It's present after the email account is created and by entering setting again,

clouseau ( 2015-04-17 09:40:14 +0300 )edit

It doesn't seem to work either, or it's very buggy (once it happend that it actually synced when a mail arrived). Now I have a new mail for 5 minutes, and Jolla's mail client still "thinks" it's up to date.

clouseau ( 2015-04-17 10:09:34 +0300 )edit

seems to work here, however I had trouble finding it because it was "too" intuitive. It's found under "Synchronisierungs-E-Mail" (that's not proper German by the way ... probably something like "Update Intervall" in English) and then instead of eg 15min you have to set it to "Immer aktuell"/"Always up-to-date". You should add this to the release notes at least.

But nice to have it, thanks :)

simonschmeisser ( 2015-04-18 14:22:12 +0300 )edit

It works for me! While I'm using only english as interface language the term "Always up-to-date" didn't declares it means "IDLE/Push-Mail". Maybe it would be better to change this to "Always up-to-date (IDLE/PUSH)". Regular users need just to read "Always" and get what they looked for, while technial experienced users need just to read "IDLE/PUSH" and get what they looked for.

Or we just wait till everybody nows. Fixed by time ;-)

hoschi ( 2015-04-21 15:13:38 +0300 )edit

I think the problem is that we're all a bit more technical than the average user. We say IDLE, but they would have no idea what we're talking about. However, IMHO, "Immediately" would sound better and more obvious that "always".

new window swipe to home effect is nice, but fading should start immediately, as there is delay between start swiping and start fading, it looks non-linear now.

while performing fast swipe it is almost like close without any effect, what is cool for fast swipe, but ther is distracting animation to side and then home screen is pushed to up to hide clock, i dunno, it is too much movement now.

there is no fade effect at the beginning and then distrupting fast animation effects :( which produce that strange feeling , this should be adjusted to be smooth again

EDIT: after few days i can say, that i dont care about effect while working, walking, mostly my swipes are quick and more important things are in my mind than watch and perceive how it closing window

but while relaxing, or working slowly with device, intended to something and switching between apps with slow gestures, the hard edge of moving border while swiping is distracting. worst is when swiping from some text app, where all the letters are together with letters from home screen and it just looks like garbage not nice GUI

i vote for a little tweak and attaching example what is more eyecandy and mask as exmaples to clarify that :) image description

image description

or make the top window sliding not just fading out, slide + fade do the job too, but i would like to prefer smooth border as on pics

Update bricked my Jolla :( It will start, not to asking pin but just shows my background picture (with no icons no text just plain background picture) and only I can do is to swipe down to de-activate phone and swipe up to see notifications. I cannot get anywhere else. And it's saying that charge your battery notification constantly with the sound even if battery should be full, at least it was connected to charger for the whole update time.

Had to do factory reset with Jolla recovery tool.

tace ( 2015-04-18 11:01:17 +0300 )edit

i has same result after applied MeeCast locksceen patch from application itself. And recovery for me was very easy via SSH. “pkcon install zypper su-devel zypper in -f lipstick-qt5 su-devel zypper in -f lipstick-jolla*” After reboot phone worked as before.

hyper_sonic ( 2015-04-19 06:13:03 +0300 )edit

Had exactly the same result with my device.

Factory resetting the device fixed it. After reset loaded the chain of updates until got to 1.1.4.28 again, now it works OK.

I had no other repositories enabled, and the probable cause was BTRFS fragmentation even though I beleved I had enough space on my filesystem...

juiceme ( 2015-04-20 11:50:16 +0300 )edit

Another factory resetter case here. I was lazy to try every possible option to get around it. Just backuped the phone, copied .vault via SCP and back to square one.

Vieno ( 2015-04-20 21:13:28 +0300 )edit

In my my case commenting out the BatteryStatusBar patch in /usr/share/lipstick-jolla-home-qt5/lockscreen/Lockscreen.qml in recovery mode did the trick. Would not recommend this if you don't know what you're doing though.

Fantastic update, especially for an early update one. UI got very smooth and fixes a lot of issues I had since the last update (sluggish interface when several apps open, crashing apps due to memory handling issues, etc). New animations are neat and should accommodate those who requested a more "window-swipe" effect. Yes, my Jolla feels new again! :-)

Unfortunately we don't get that many new features, next to an extended support for landscape mode - yet it a lot has been done in polishing the system. The Facebook API story is a bad one, especially since Facebook was so beautifully integrated into Sailfish OS (Contact pictures and backgrounds). But we live in a world where business and greed sadly stand over innovation and ease of use. Jolla will have to face the issue that 3rd party services try more and more to exclude those who don't use the official products.

Comments

That's true. The FB integration was the best among other smartphones.

Robert Zaremba ( 2015-05-05 18:34:09 +0300 )edit

will the update delete the existing Facebook contacts? (and additional info linked to those contacts?). Or will it just stop syncing?. I understand: sharing, feeds, IM etc. will stop working; that's ok. But will it delete any existing contact details?

Hi there,

since the last update my phone frequently reboots, often during a call. It seems to happen more often if the signal is weak.

Did anybody else notice that?

edit flag offensive delete publish link more

Comments

Can't confirm weak signal reason (may be, not sure), but also have troubles with frequent reboots.
