As feared the tablet is postponed by one or two months.

What are your opionions on that? Any "angry" buyers, or is it ok unless the Software is mature.

My personal opinion: I'm a little startled as I do not own a tablet at the moment and was looking forward using it for vacation / weekends during summer and leaving the Notebook at home. But I'm quite sure that the Software needs a lot more time to be mature (seeing the recent problems with 1.1.4)

Jolla Tablet this time does not manage to be unlike other crowdfunded projects. And I am not satisfied with just mentioning that they changed to a "better display". However, in general 2 months postponing (May->June earlier, June->July now) is quite okay in case tablet will really happen in July.

To be honest, I am not surprised, many projects and launches are delayed. I am a little surprised by the July shipping date, which is in the Finnish summer vacation times. Is that a good timing? Further thinking, what will happen to the planned release of Sailfish 2 for the phones in June? Will this also be postponed, and if so, for how long?

I'm pretty disappointed by this. I appreciate that there can be unforeseen problems with both software and hardware implementation, but this is coming a little "out of the blue".

Given the rate of technology advances, it seems probable that by the end of July (or August or.....) the basis of the tablet ("INTEL CPU") will have been superseded by faster, cooler, smaller iterations, so the device will simply be out-of-date within a very short time of release. This has already happened to some extent with Intel's recent "Atom" announcements.

I was expecting it from day one, since the timeframe was too short. The reasons they bring are not satisfactory to me: you cannot expect a project to go smooth and you should always allow for some unforeseen issues. Anyway, this is not a problem for me, apart from the shipment period since there is the risk that the tablet arrives when I am on vacation with subsequent delivery issues. The software maturity is not a stopper at all: I expect frequent updates as it is for the phone.

I can memorize companies that simply did not deliver in time without informing theyr users/buyers many weeks in advance. So i credit Jolla for early info. display is a plus. On the contrary, Jolla could improve by not setting themselfes to close deadlines. The result of potential unhappy buyers could have been avoided and be turned into a happy "earlier than announced" effect. It all comes down to psychology ;)

IM(h)O the postponing decision is great for three reasons:

I trust the team and I am sure they have balanced their reasons and carefully considered the facts.
I am excited about what I learned about the tablet so far, so today's prospect of the hardware being even better and its software carefully polished is just great news for me: We will get more than expected!
I will use the tablet as book reading device during my time-consuming train rides every weekend, so the better the screen will be the more I will enjoy using it for these 3.5 hours reading sessions.

in short: For me this means an increase of pleasant anticipation. :-)

I wish the team a good time and a lot of fun while making this cool product even better!

When it comes to a book reading there's nothing better then e-paper. I would never read a book on a tablet after three+ years of using kindle. ;-P

@khzimmer a fourth reason: which join more or less your first one. the team should take the time to check all their software and hardware design to be sure that the product fulfilled the great experiment that jolla has promised. Then should take more time to test it live, if this still fulfilled this.

As many others here I'm sorta slightly disappointed with the delay and worried about the new delivery date as it just in the heat of vacations season — with all possible problems coming out of this. But I surely prefer to get a more or less polished product to a tablet mostly unusable from the first day. It's also great they've found a better display for the tablet.

What I DON'T like, is that since the end of IGG campaign phase 1 and through all the phase 2 we were told the hw is fixed and nothing can be done. That was one of the reasons, we were told it's impossible to implement 3G/4G support even after $2.5 mln (one of the phase 1 goals) had been reached. And now Jolla declares it has to postpone delivery as they decided to change display to some (undisclosed) better one.

Here it's just about replacing a component (external to the tablet PCB) with another one, not about changing the tablet design to include or change core functions.

@Giacomo Di Giacomo Yes and no. Since it was named among main reasons that would take an extra 2 months to finish the product, it does not look so "just replacing" to me. Obviousely there are at least some problems to be solved: changed physical dimensions, possible other voltage/power consumption, etc. So, if Jolla found it possible to spend time and efforts to replace display (which was already changed once at the beginning of IGG phase 2), why not to implement 3G/4G support — one of the most voted for features and, what's more important, one of the (fulfiled) goals for IGG campaign declared initially by Jolla?

Changing the display is only half the truth. If you read the blog post closely you'll see that the display HAD to be changed because the original one is causing too much trouble. The display is not being changed because, oh look, there's a prettier display available. Especially not this late in the production process.

@rburkhanov: Adding 3G/4G (if 4G is even possible with the current Intel SoC) would require quite a few changes to the hardware, need a new hole for the SIM tray in the casing, need CE certification and maybe a range of other certifications as well to be allowed to sell it (in selected parts of the world). I assume you could add another half a year of delay if you add 3G.

I am happy with their choise to use a better quality display because:

First of all: My Jolla Phone's display is deteriorating since day 1 and i don't mind them taking a little longer to make shure the tablet is better, and completely as they want it to be.

Second: I would rather having them postponing the delivery than just deliver a half-developed product and releasing a "all NEW even better mark II design" in two months that is better (like our Sony friends do ALL the time).

I dont mind the delay, as long as they keep us posted about is. And that is just what they did. :)

Let's hope the tablet will be so awesome that we will all become as fanatics as you are! ;) I'm okay with postponing for making a proper product, but maybe I won't thank Jolla for it. :) :D

The pixels on the side of the screen are falling apart, at least, thats what is looks like. It never really bothered me as its only visible on a black screen.

But if the display on the tablet can be made of better quality why complain? :)

That happened for my Nokia N950, but much more. It ended up with large areas of black pixels.

@Tanghus this sort of happened/happen to my N950 as well... but it happened to have a large area of pixels blackened, then they "fixed" themselves somehow. The effect has returned at least once.

I don't want an unfinished product so the delay is okay right now. I'm just scared that there might be other delays later making the Jolla Tablet running out of date compared to other upcoming tablets spec's...

I feel the same way. Its a tough one for jolla - I wouldn't mind a "mostly" functioning tablet, based on my experience with the phone, however there are going to be a lot of people new to the jolla world - many from the US who would want a very polished OS right from the start. I'm disappointed but I understand. At the same time if there were a way to get an early version and take the hit of some things not working all the time - I'd be happy to be one of those..

Product will be unfinished anyway, that is a fact. But it needs to go out and start getting feedback. Phone was unfinished when it shipped and it has been improving only partly. With this speed it will take years to get the product finished which is unfortunate thing. Still far away from a product sellable to general public. Great platform for hobbyists and open source community. Key question is how to push the last mile? And is there even plan to do that?

My thoughts exactly, although I'm not too scared - this was to be expected since most crowdfunded products have delays, although having the tablet during summertime would have been nice of course.

I'm not so concerned about the hardware itself, the software and the July date concerns me though as I find it hard to believe that Finns code in June-July, so I'm actually guessing the tablet will arrive in November-December, to be honest. As a Christmas present! :)

Very disappointed of not being able to have it along on holidays. There'll be trouble with delivery as I'll be out of town. Also not very transparent of them not to explain exactly what the problem is. Would expect Jolla to sweeten the wait w. some nice extra: a radio? a sleeve? etc. In any case, better late and working than an early brick, the disappointment would be larger :-) Btw, any chance of them finishing earlier than announced?

Fully accordening with you guys, we also bought our first jolla tablet since the first hour of selling of the first day, with my wife that also has Jolla phone. We could not ever imagine that we have to wait so long and then, after this long delay time, we couldn't have included 3-4G. Sorry for my english, I am italian and I am very disappointed, like the others customers. We also are away for holidays in july like is usually here in Finland, so I propose to wait a little bit more, but with the only ecception to get the fully 3-4G version tablet, with a little payment of difference (that's not the price question, but full functionalities, see SKYPE, for videoconference and for privacy in internet..). I think this is lonely right way to make Jolla's customers again 8) happy! About the pcb of the tablet, eccept for the size, would not to be much more complicate to change from the actual size, showed from Stefano Mosconi on you tube at the Mobile conference 2015.

It was always likely that there would be delays with new hardware and the result was always going to be a tablet that was lower spec and behind the leading technical edge of the market. This is why it was always important to go for the highest spec economically possible at the outset, especially when it comes to cpu, ram and other storage. It is also likely to have to last longer than after after delivery as new devices can't be developed as quickly as the big boys. I believe this is where the intel hardware may be an advantage as it could be possible to produce an updated device early in the tablet's lifetime with the same architecture, but updated processor etc.

Perhaps future Jolla devices could concentrate on developing Sailfish on other platforms.

Either way there are lessons for any future phone hardware, which I hope will be coming soon. Is it going to happen?

I agree the new timescales will cause delivery problem as people are likely to be away on holidays. I hope there is a mechanism that allows for purchasers to be uncontactable for some time while delivery and import duty is arranged.
