Bike mount
I'm looking for a way to safely mount my Jolla on my bike. This would enable me to safely navigate, use cycling, geocaching and augmented reality apps, and not have to hold the phone unconfortably in my pockets while biking. Please share your experience on any attempts (succesful or not) of using either commercial or DIY mounts.
Points to consider:
- weather protection
- sturdy, secure and durable materials
- universal mountability, versatility (ability to mount on different kinds of bikes, shopping trolleys, etc.)
- low profile
- quick attachment and detachment
Also, I'd like to hear your thoughts: Bike mount TOH - great idea or completely useless? Maybe a TOH with a slim bike mount bracket, so that it would still fit into your pocket. Maybe something similar to this:
Not a bad idea at all. My bike is my only transport, but I have made holders for previous phones and in the end I stopped using it., basically, I got bored with the idea/concept and never found a real use for it, other than it looks a bit flash for other geeky types when noticed. ;)
My previous phone was a Nokia N9. I made a holder using a Nokia CC-3015 case and a quick thumb clamp style bracket from an old back light, just right for my handlebar thickness. I literally screwed it together with 3/4" self tappers and a drop of superglue, clamped it to my handlebars and pulled the thumb lever to tighten, which in the end, I needed to wrap a short piece of wire around the thumb lever as it kept springing open while riding. I did have pics but I believe they've long been deleted.
My only reservation with a TOH type of holder, is the fact that the organic clips may not hold up under duress/rougher terrain and might simply pop off and let the business end of your phone, fly!, so a form of TOH that kind of wraps around the top/bottom and sides of the phone would be important. As for weather conditions, like rain, I'd prefer to remove the phone completely and stick it somewhere drier for the duration of the journey.
Perhaps a holder that can be used for a car or a bike would be appropriate, as this would appeal to a wider audience...?
Moreover, I don't think we are going to see much activity from Jolla on any range of TOH's, they barely stock the ones they did design, check out the shop, still only the Aloe one can be bought. http://shop.jolla.com/eu_en/cat-the-other-half.html - where is the TOH concept going?, will it be included in the J2 phone?, who knows.
The idea is a good one, but is possibly only for those with access to a 3d printer or the like, basically rendering it as nothing more than community based projects. That isn't to say Jolla won't get behind ideas from the public. But what have we seen so far, a handful of projects from Skark, Dirkvl, Kimmoli and one or 2 others, can we buy these items yet?, yes, some of them, maybe all, I haven't really looked properly.
