Update on 31.8.2015: 1.1.7.28 will be rolled out to all our users today. The update process will take a long time to complete (especially the file system optimizations), please be patient.

In some cases (<1% so far in the early access group), it has taken about 1.5-2 hours where the upgrade was stuck at 95-99%. The on-device update texts have been adjusted to warn about this issue.

If you have developer mode enabled, you may enable persistent logging to help us get logs to identify this issue: In /etc/systemd/journald.conf, change Storage=volatile to Storage=automatic and create /var/log/journal before downloading the update. Change it back to volatile after the upgrade goes through.

As the issue remains open at the moment, we've added a new feature in 1.1.7.28 to enable persistent logs during software upgrade process. Should this issue reoccur while upgrading to 1.1.9, you will be able to retrieve logs from affected devices to assist the debugging.

Please ensure that you have ~1.5GB of free disk space before attempting to upgrade your Jolla. This release introduces a new build toolchain, which means almost all packages will get updated: The more space you have, the better. If connected to the internet, your Jolla should receive an OS update notification shortly.

As usual,

  • If you use phonehook from OpenRepos, uninstall it before upgrading
  • If you use patchmanager, revert all applied patches before upgrading
  • Do not reboot the device while the update is in progress.
  • The device screen may blank out during the update process, you may waken the display by a short press on the power key to monitor the progress.

For detailed instructions on updating software, visit Zendesk

      • Option to Stop/Start Android support
    • Added a settings page for Android applications in Settings > App from where you can control how the installed application works on your Jolla device (Force stop, Clear cache, Clear data, and running the app on background)
    • Having the option to run Android applications on background enables receiving notifications for Android messaging apps even when the app is closed.
    • Better WLAN connection handling for Android apps
  • Introduce certificate handling middleware (p11-kit). All crypto libraries now share one CA store.
  • Update to PulseAudio 6.0, improving Bluetooth audio

Security fixes

CVE-2013-7423 CVE-2014-0172 CVE-2014-8116 CVE-2014-8117 CVE-2014-8484 CVE-2014-8485 CVE-2014-8501 CVE-2014-8502 CVE-2014-8503 CVE-2014-8504 CVE-2014-8737 CVE-2014-9402 CVE-2014-9447 CVE-2014-9496 CVE-2015-0247 CVE-2015-1472 CVE-2015-1473 CVE-2015-1572 CVE-2015-2806 CVE-2015-3143 CVE-2015-3144 CVE-2015-3145 CVE-2015-3148 CVE-2015-3153

Known issues

OS update process

  • OS update may remain at about 95% for a long time. If you have developer mode enabled, you may enable persistent logging to help us get logs to identify this issue: In /etc/systemd/journald.conf change Storage=volatile to Storage=automatic and create /var/log/journal before downloading the update. Change it back to volatile after the upgrade went through.
  • If you have phonehook from OpenRepos installed uninstall it before upgrading.
  • Currently, checks on available disk space happens very late during the OS upgrade process and will fail in the installation phase if the disk space is low. Normally there should be an error note asking you to free some disk space and try again, but in some marginal cases it might not be shown. Should this happen, free some disk space and try to install the OS update again.
  • OS update may fail due to some other reasons too, for example it may have installed some packages from the new release and still have something left from the old. If the device can boot up, you can try to recover by doing the following. If not, you can attempt to recover the device using the recovery mode.
    • Delete the file /home/nemo/.cache/store-client/os-info
    • Stop the store-client process (for e.g. pkill store-client)
    • Reopen Settings app, check for updates again and attempt to install the OS update again
  • We have also noted that if the OS update is attempted while there is long queue of installation of apps from the Store, the system may end up in mixed state (for e.g. select all the apps from startup wizard, and start the system update already while the apps are being installed).
    • In such cases, the OS update appears to be stalled, however it is just waiting for the installations to complete before attempting to upgrade the OS. Just wait patiently, the worst thing to do here is to reboot the device!

Other issues

  • calDAV and cardDAV services are in experimental stage. We have made some improvements with this update, however you may still face issues with certain service providers. Do report it in t.j.c. We'll take a look and try to sort it out.
  • Deleting photo from Camera roll may also delete the previous photo. If camera reel's pulley menu has "Show details" greyed out - means the photo hasn't been indexed yet. Deleting photo in such state will result in previous photo deleted too. If you wait long enough (~10-15seconds) for 'Show details' to become active, only that photo will get deleted when you choose to.

First release named after a Swedish lake!

Stefanix ( 2015-07-15 14:08:33 +0200 )edit

@Stefanix, or the Swedish name for the 30 Finnish lakes named Karhujärvi. I doubt there are any Finnish lakes starting with B, as that letter is seldomly used in the Finnish language.

It's a lake between Porvoo and Loviisa so I'd say it is very much a Finnish lake. Finland has a long history of Swedish rule though, so Swedish names are not that uncommon. See Järviwiki)

Yaniel ( 2015-07-15 14:16:18 +0200 )edit

Update failed after the progress bar was over 90 %. However, after reboot the phone claims that it's running version 1.1.7.24 but at the same time it offers an update notification but checking for updates doesn't work...

skvark ( 2015-07-15 14:46:47 +0200 )edit

The progress bar is at 98% for an hour now, must I reboot my device or waiting more?

TellienInTouch ( 2015-07-15 16:08:25 +0200 )edit

Update went fast and smooth, everything seems to be ok.

William ( 2015-07-15 16:42:44 +0200 )edit

monkeyisland ( 2015-07-15 17:53:54 +0200 )edit

Update went smooth, everything seems to be ok. Thank you, Jolla !

tvicol ( 2015-07-15 19:39:24 +0200 )edit

Update was successful. Took about 30 mins in total. So far so good:)

richardski ( 2015-07-15 20:06:36 +0200 )edit

About 30mins here, too (including the file system optimization). Device became really hot during the update process, so I guess it was hard work. :)

ossi1967 ( 2015-07-15 20:16:50 +0200 )edit

Update installed without problems.

Two words: spare batteries. I'm sorry to keep on repeating this, but none of this all matters as long as we get those.

jsalonen ( 2015-07-15 21:23:37 +0200 )edit

@nick75 : There is Finnish lakes which do have name starting with letter B. One example is Bodominjärvi here in Espoo.

Mika Hanhijärvi ( 2015-07-15 22:03:29 +0200 )edit

@Mika Hanhijärvi, you are absolutely right, there are some lakes starting with B in their Finnish names. And that particular lake (Bodominjärvi) have a sad story attached to it..

@Yaniel, where is that lake? It does not appear in Järviwiki, so if you could provide the location, I will try to update Järviwiki.

@nick75 Looks like TJC broke my link. (the closing parenthesis is supposed to be part of the url) Here it is again: http://www.jarviwiki.fi/wiki/Björnträsket_(16.001.1.003)

Yaniel ( 2015-07-15 22:16:58 +0200 )edit

Flawless for me. It did a balance beforehand. Had to reboot after reapplying the remorese timer patch. Also, had to relink my contacts. That was all.

lispy ( 2015-07-15 22:35:13 +0200 )edit

Thanks for that upgrade. Everything seems to work smoothly as before, but snappier.

@nick75@Mika Hanhijärvi we actually used Bodominjärvi already, before we started selling the phone / make public releases

@monkeyisland had the same issue with Threema; I re-installed the latest apk I found on my device, then everything was fine. The update itself went well, took about 60min, without the progress bar getting stuck or anything

tokaru ( 2015-07-16 00:17:05 +0200 )edit

Anyone else got: Sailfish device failed to update, please try again later (from memory) and OK button? So weird (happened at around 80%)? (probably related to battery being below 50%, second attempt went fine and much quicker, phew)

szopin ( 2015-07-16 00:24:53 +0200 )edit

Update successful. Though i did have to move some data to the sdcard before the balance would work.

GD ( 2015-07-16 05:53:42 +0200 )edit

Thanks for the update. After initial issue with "not enough free space" and resolving it using btrfs balance, the updrade installed without any hickups. Release 1.1.7.24 is running smoothly for me, but thproof of the pudding is in the eating.

WilliePre ( 2015-07-16 08:37:46 +0200 )edit

@nick75: Finnish uses just 15 letters of the alphabet, the rest of letters like B are only used in some loan words and most Finns will pronounce it like P. The 16th sound ŋ do not have it's own letter.

Trizt ( 2015-07-16 08:54:26 +0200 )edit

@Trizt, Yes, I am aware - being from Finland myself ... eventhough now living in Sweden.

@Yaniel, thanks for the correction, now I too found it. The mixture of using Finnish and Swedish names for various locations makes it sometimes a challange to find what you are looking for ...

nick75 ( 2015-07-16 08:59:31 +0200 )edit

@Aard

1.1.7.25 (17.7.2015): Fix an issue in package management middleware - you probably meant 27/7/2015

virgi26 ( 2015-07-27 18:04:53 +0200 )edit

"This release introduces a new build toolchain, which means almost all packages will get updated"

Considering the above, I expected the size to be quite big, however this update was very small and was done in tens of seconds, at most. Is this expected or not?

can't download 1.1.7.25. It says problem with store or gets stuck on downloading. having problems with installing apps as well.

same problem for me ..cant download 1.1.7.25..its showing "problem with the store"..i also tried deleting "os.info" file from home\nemo\ .catche and "pkill store-client" from terminal..but nothing helps..its not showing even the download size of update..

venki ( 2015-07-28 09:55:20 +0200 )edit

1.1.7.25 just downloaded and installed. Full cold reboot performed and so far all appears to be working OK. I will carry on testing features and apps to see if any problems arise.

richardski ( 2015-07-28 10:37:47 +0200 )edit

@clau: If you have already installed 1.1.7.24 the new packages are already there and there's no need to update them again.

Giacomo Di Giacomo ( 2015-07-28 22:01:03 +0200 )edit

When will Björnträsket be rolled out for everyone?

wanderer ( 2015-08-04 13:23:12 +0200 )edit

@wanderer - it was supposed to be released last week, but there have been no news about the roll out schedule since. I myself was hoping to see it roll out, but it seems we get the silent game again. :P

raketti ( 2015-08-04 18:07:44 +0200 )edit

Downloading 1.1.7.25, on an brand new Jolla.

WilliePre ( 2015-08-04 19:16:24 +0200 )edit

@wanderer we're still investigating update issues (https://together.jolla.com/question/99054/bug-update-to-117-hang-at-95-99/)

At this version i can feel much difference regarding android apps, before the version not able to use some of the apps but in this i am able to use android apps without any issue. And sometime when i click on folder icon it stucks and screen goes black and lock screen appears, i think it may have been fixed in yesterdays(13/8/2015) update. waiting for v2.0 as you promised it will be released on the month of august.

I guess 1.1.7 will be skipped for the public and 2.0 will be rolled out ? What do you think?

tl;dr: I broke stuff and reset, now seems to work, but what data to restore?

I was happy to see the update being avaible now. Then I thought better enable logging. I forgot to create '/var/log/journal' though. To finish enabling logging to files I thought I'd better reboot the phone before installing the update (which I already downloaded) Then I ended up in a reboot loop. I managed to get some of the logs (it created the missing folder itself) and data before I reset the phone using the Rescue-Mode. Now, having the full /home/nemo folder on the sdcard i am wondering which files/folders to restore. If someone is interested in the logfiles I will upload them somewhere.

Help, since the update, my sim card is not detected (as detailed here).

My jolla phone is of no use since then, I tried rebooting, and rebooting the network conection, without success. This is a major issue for me, as my phone can neither send nor receive calls and text, and wifi connection is blocked as well.

Did you check if update went through conpletely? Maybe check some of these possibilities mentioned in zendesk article...

drummer12 ( 2015-09-02 21:48:27 +0200 )edit

Thanks for this answer, but both my wifi and my 4G connections are unavailable, so I cannot complete the 2.1.1 part of this article.

MaxR ( 2015-09-02 22:48:47 +0200 )edit

Just to discard the hypothesis of a SIM issue: try with an other SIM card (preferably from an other operator)

objectifnul ( 2015-09-03 00:55:08 +0200 )edit

I contacted Jolla care: a factory reset solved the issue.
