What is the best maps/navigation application to use on Jolla? [answered]

Jolla phone has native Maps application with HERE's maps.
But it's also possible to install android applications such as: Yandex.maps, OsmAnd, Navfree etc...
Third option is to use online maps: again, HERE.com etc...

What is the best option? What works better for navigation while driving a car?

Waiting for a dev (or team of dev) to step up with an Openstreetmap based offline map app.

OSM tiles can be used by Qml FlickableMap component. But not offline maps, I guess navit engine can be reused

@ortylp: IMHO not really viable. I've researched OsmAnd to see if its rendering engine could be used in modRana - unfortunately the whole application is written in the Android Java flavor, so not really portable at all.

@Sfiet_Konstantin dreaming of a bittorrent extention for VCS, so that changable maps can be used over bittorrent protocol in order to provide fast on and offline maps with Openstreetmap (this would reduce strain on openstreetmap itself as well)

Just for the record, I'm porting modRana to Sailfish. :)

UPDATE:

modRana for Sailfish has been released and is available from OpenRepos!

Once the policies make it possible (Python & positioning), modRana will be also available from Jolla store/Harbour.

was my favourite nav app on the N900 work very well I especially liked the possiblity of increased zoom on the display (my eye sight is not too good). I mean not just zoom in the map but also increase text size

I just heard about Mæp-qt, ported to sailfish by DCaliste using data from Open Street Map, Google Maps and Virtual Earth.

Some bugs remain but he is still working on it and the app just look great so far. You could help him to improve it on his dedicated page --> http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=91538.

1.3.7-8 version is available on OpenRepos --> here.

"Navfree" looks promising but has issues during real life usage and also limited set of countries covered by offline maps.

Currently the best choice for me is OsmAnd: offline OSM maps, good turn-by-turn, POI search etc.

Currently GPS on Android isn't working but for navigation i think that Waze for Android is probably the best.

EDIT : Since the last update, Waze is working well (except vocal recognition).

It works or at least it works for me. I tested with Endomondo and was able to register full trail. Only altitude looked weird, but that should not be important for navigation.

You can find waze easily on yandex and it is working fine. It is more fluid that the native N9 application.

I +1 for Waze, though it exhibits some fairly inexplicable behaviours -- like telling me it didn't have a network connection when trying to search for a destination (when it was successfully sending and receiving traffic info all the while). That was yesterday...today everything is fine...

is your AGPS really not working under Android? I'm able to use Google Maps and 4sq with little problem, though obtaining initial position could be quicker.

I can report that GPS doesn't work for me on NavFree, whereas it's fine on Waze. NavFree has me off the coast of Africa in the South Atlantic. :(

It's nice, but only version 6 (from older devices) works fine and has offline maps. Also offline maps are not available for car navigation.

I just need Google Maps, because some Android apps depend on that (Carsharing and Travel). When I install google maps, can I use the "show on map" function in these apps?

Get OpenStreetMap from Amazon App Store (Android). The donation app is "OsmAnd+" and the free one "OsmAnd"

You can also install nightly build of OsmAnd+ if you want to support development with bugreports and testing (in case you do not have resources for donation :) FDroid repo has also relatively recent version of OsmAnd+

OsmAnd~ from FDroid is so long the best solution for me (offline navigation with osm cards). Does voice navigation work with android support layer? I downloaded and activated it, but doesn't hear anything.

I use free application called "MapFactor: GPS Navigation" (from Android).

Pros:

It has offline maps (free from OSM and some paid ones).
It can be used for both viewing the map and in-car navigation with voice commands ("turn left" and such) and 3D view.
In big/popular cities you can see house numbers on the map.
You can edit and then save routes for later.

Cons:

Map view is not very smooth (no anti-aliasing). I assume this is to save battery, but would be nice to have as an option.
A bit hard to operate (at least on first use).

Which version of MapFactor are you using and where did you get it from? I sideloaded MapFactor from my Nexus 7 but I cannot start it since it complains that no SD card is installed!

I don't have micro SD currently and I did copy it from Nexus 7 too. Had no problems except that compass is not working on Jolla on Android and so the dot on the map is always facing the same direction.

I have this app installed but the problem is, as with all OSM maps, that there is no street/house-numbers for places I have searched. So does anybody know if those TomTom maps would work if I was to buy them?

For using basic navigation I use HERE maps on Jolla, although I'm still eagerly waiting for navigation extension for it.

But for using navigation services offroad with phone, more accurate "terrain maps" are required. There are some android apps available for Finland region to make offroad use possible such as one on karttaselain.fi (Port for Jolla's android version is coming) , but native Sailfish port is still yet to come. I'm also quite sure this offroad map application would be nice elsewhere too, but I don't have info on developers of "terrain maps" outside Finland.

If someone has info on developers or people making "terrain maps" for your own local area or country, you can put info under that issue so it is accessible to all interested in topic.

If you have PlayStore support installed (hacked in) then Skobbler ForeverMap is the right solution. (The other would be obviously OsmAnd :)

I use it daily my Android phone incl. speed radar warnings (A/D/CH only at the moment).

I have not tested it extensively with Jolla yet. Unofficial beta seems to work also without Google (after some hiccups), but no idea how does map download work in the released version without Google framework.

It uses OSM data. You pay some negligible amount of money for a country or the whole continent/world. The company gives back to the OSM community: created tools that support mapping, provides additional data gathered from its users back to the OSM project.
